“What? Marry you?” Elina cried.
“Yes, marry me. All you have to do is become my wife. And I’ll pay you one hundred million every month!” Sam said firmly.
Elina stood frozen, both eyes still wide open. She stared blankly at Sam, her lips pressed tightly together.
“Sam, are you crazy? We don’t even know who this girl is! Where she came from or what kind of family she has!” Kevin protested.
But Sam ignored Kevin’s words. He kept his eyes fixed on the confused girl in front of him.
“Well? Is my offer not enough for you? In that case, I’ll raise it to two hundred million a month. Is that enough?”
Elina’s heart felt as though it were about to leap out of her chest. Was the man sitting across from her out of his mind? Her heartbeat grew more erratic. Maybe he was only dangling the money in front of her to gain her trust and lure her into a trap.
“No way! I know you must be planning to sell me to some lecherous man, right? I’m not interested in your offer at all. Finish your food and get out of here!”
Elina stood up and quickly turned around. She strode away from Sam and Kevin.
“Hey, wait!”
Elina stopped and turned back.
“Yes? You agree?” Sam asked with a broad smile.
“Don’t forget to pay for your food before you leave!” Elina snapped. The girl rolled her eyes and hurried toward the back.
Sam roughly raked a hand through his hair. He looked utterly desperate.
“You’re insane, Sam! You actually proposed to a girl you’d just met like that. What will Grandpa say if he finds out? You could get crossed off the list of heirs!” Kevin said sternly.
“What do you think I should do? Besides, that girl earlier… what was her name? Hmm… right, Elina. She looks innocent and naive. Not like all those gold diggers Grandpa has introduced me to.”
Kevin massaged his temples. “But, Sam. These days, you can’t judge someone by her face. How do you know she’s innocent and naive? Maybe that’s just her way of trapping rich guys like us!”
“Enough, Vin. Stop complaining!”
“Hey… you rich people sitting over there! When you’re done eating, pay up and get out of here!” Elina’s shrill voice rang out from behind the display counter as she stood with her hands on her hips.
Kevin rose from his seat. “Let’s get out of here!”
Sam stood as well and followed Kevin. He approached Elina and handed her a bill. Elina quickly gave him his change.
Kevin sauntered out of the eatery first. Sam, however, looked at Elina one more time.
“My offer still stands. You can think it over carefully. Here’s my business card. You can call the number on it,” Sam said. He placed a gold-colored business card with black lettering on top of the counter.
Then Sam left the eatery.
“What was all that commotion about, El? Auntie heard an awful racket from the bathroom.”
“It’s nothing, Auntie. A crazy person was throwing a fit and almost barged in here,” Elina replied.
She picked up the business card and slipped it into her pants pocket.
“Huh? A crazy person?”
“Don’t worry, Auntie. I already chased him off.”
“Thank goodness. Oh, El, where are those two men?”
“They’re gone.” Elina went over to the table and picked up the plates and glasses they had used.
“Oh my goodness… Auntie always says that if you eat here, you have to finish your food. And they left so much behind. Rich people are all the same—they can’t appreciate food just because they can buy whatever they want,” Misnah grumbled.
Elina paid no attention. She carried all the plates and glasses to the back to wash them.
