Episode 1: The First Shadow of Darkness
Location: Mumbai – the penthouse of an exclusive private club
Time: 12:30 a.m., torrential rain and a violent storm
Outside, the entire city seemed to have come to a standstill because of the storm, but on the top floor of Mumbai’s most expensive and mysterious club, the silence was even deeper. Raindrops pounded against the enormous glass windows, as if the storm outside were trying to force its way in.
Reya Sharma’s hands were shaking violently. She held her old purse tightly against her chest. Her eyes remained fixed on a large sofa in the corner of the room, where her older brother, Rohan, was sitting. The color had drained from Rohan’s face, and beads of sweat dripped from his forehead, soaking the collar of his shirt.
“Rohan... why are we here? You said you were just meeting a friend,” Reya said, trying to keep her voice low and controlled, but the fear in it was unmistakable.
Rohan didn’t even look at his sister. His lips had gone completely dry. “Reya, please... just be quiet. If we leave here today without making a deal, by tomorrow morning my body will be found in some filthy drain.”
Reya’s heart began pounding. Ever since their father’s death, their family had been crushed under the weight of debt. Reya was an ordinary architect, working day and night to keep the household running. But Rohan had a terrible addiction to gambling and betting. Reya knew he was in debt, but until tonight, she had never imagined how large—or how dangerous—that debt could be.
Just then, the room’s heavy rosewood door opened with a soft creak.
The lights in the room were dim, but the moment he stepped inside, the entire atmosphere changed. The air seemed to grow heavy and cold. Two tall bodyguards in black suits followed him in, stopping at the doorway.
It was Riyansh Khurana.
Riyansh wore a dark charcoal three-piece suit. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and his face was chiseled like a marble statue. His jawline was razor-sharp, and there was such a cold, empty silence in his deep black eyes that anyone would have taken a step back under their gaze. A costly cigar burned between the fingers of his right hand, its smoke slowly spreading through the air like a poisonous snake.
Riyansh didn’t spare Reya even a glance. He walked straight to his leather swivel chair, sat down, and propped his shoes on the table.
“Rohan Sharma.” Riyansh’s voice was deep, slow, and calm—but behind that calm lurked a terrifying poison. “You’ve crossed the deadline I gave you.”
Rohan immediately slid off the sofa and crawled on his knees until he reached Riyansh’s shoes. Pressing his hands together, he began to cry. “Mr. Khurana... please! Please give me a little more time! I promise I’ll pay you back the 500 million rupees! Just one month... give me only one month!”
Riyansh took a long drag from his cigar and blew the smoke directly into Rohan’s pleading face.
“500 million?” A faint smile touched Riyansh’s face, but there was no happiness in it—only a terrifying sense of deliberate humiliation. “You’re not worth 50 rupees, Rohan. And you made 500 million rupees disappear from my accounts through fraud. This isn’t debt... it’s theft. And in the Khurana Empire, thieves receive only one punishment.”
Riyansh made a small gesture with his finger. Without wasting a second, one of his guards pulled a black pistol fitted with a silencer from inside his jacket and pressed it against Rohan’s forehead.
“No!” Seeing Riyansh’s cold attitude, Reya screamed.
She rushed forward in the blink of an eye and stood in front of Rohan like a shield. She tried to push the guard’s hand away. “Stop! You can’t do this! It’s against the law! This is murder!”
For the first time, Riyansh Khurana’s cold black eyes shifted from Rohan to Reya.
His full attention was now fixed on her. A strange expression crossed his face—sharp, terrifying attraction. Reya’s innocent face, her trembling eyes, her tear-streaked cheeks, and the fearless courage she showed in trying to protect her brother despite her fear... all of it was completely new to Riyansh.
Riyansh rose slowly from his chair. Every step carried him toward Reya. She tried to back away, but her feet seemed rooted to the floor. He was so tall that his shadow completely swallowed her.
Riyansh stopped directly in front of Reya. The sharp scent of expensive cologne and cigar smoke clung to his body, enough to leave her senses reeling.
“Rohan...” Riyansh said without taking his eyes off Reya. “Is this your sister?”
Still sprawled on the floor, Rohan answered quickly. “Yes... yes, Mr. Khurana! This is Reya! She... she’s an architect! She has nothing to do with any of this, please let her go! Do whatever you want to me!”
Riyansh extended his right hand. His long, cold fingers gripped Reya’s chin and tilted her face upward. Reya’s breath caught. His touch was so cold that a shiver ran down her spine.
“She’s remarkably beautiful...” Riyansh whispered, his voice carrying an obsession powerful enough to seize anyone in its grip. “And you dragged such a beautiful face into my darkness, Rohan?”
“Let me go... don’t touch me,” Reya said, trying to make her voice as strong as possible, though her heart was pounding like a trapped bird. “You can file charges against my brother. You can call the police. But you have no right to take anyone’s life.”
Riyansh let out a low, terrifying laugh. “The police? Ms. Sharma, the police in this city move at my command. I make the laws here, and I decide the punishments.”
Riyansh signaled for his guard to lower the pistol. Rohan let out a long breath of relief, unaware that the real destruction was only about to begin.
Riyansh adjusted the button of his suit and leaned very close to Reya. She felt his warm breath against her neck, raising goose bumps across her skin.
“500 million rupees comes at a very high price, Reya,” Riyansh said, rolling her name across his tongue as if it already belonged to him. “Your brother couldn’t repay that money in ten lifetimes. But... I can give him one chance.”
Reya looked fearfully into his eyes. “What kind of chance?”
Riyansh pulled a black pen from his pocket and slid a legal document on the table toward Reya.
“This contract is for three years,” Riyansh began in his icy voice. “Under this contract, you will live in my house... in my world. You won’t set foot outside that mansion without my permission. You will obey everything I say and fulfill my every desire. And in return... I’ll forgive your brother’s 500 million rupee debt and let him live.”
Reya’s mind went completely numb. The ground seemed to vanish beneath her feet. “This... this isn’t a deal! It’s a prison! I won’t live as your slave!”
“A slave?” Riyansh leaned closer and ran a finger over her tear-damp cheek. “No, my love. You’ll become my obsession.”
Riyansh picked up the pen from the table and forcibly pressed it into Reya’s trembling fingers.
“You have only ten seconds,” Riyansh said, the same murderous coldness returning to his voice. “Sign... or watch a bullet tear through your brother’s skull.”
The guard once again pressed the pistol against Rohan’s ear. Rohan crawled on his knees until he reached Reya’s feet and began to sob. “Reya! Please save me! Sign it, Reya! These men will kill me! Please do your duty as my sister!”
Tears streamed continuously down Reya’s face. On one side was her brother’s life—her last remaining family—and on the other was her own freedom and self-respect. She looked into Riyansh’s eyes. There wasn’t even a trace of mercy there, only a stubborn, hungry, dangerous obsession standing ready to devour her alive.
With trembling hands, Reya signed the last page of the contract.
Riyansh picked up the contract and studied Reya’s signature. A sinister, triumphant smile spread across his face. He tossed the pen aside, then seized Reya’s wrist in one swift motion and yanked her toward him. Reya collided with his hard chest.
“Welcome to my hell, Reya,” Riyansh whispered, bending close to her ear. “From tonight on... you belong to me and me alone.”
Reya closed her eyes, and the lightning cracking outside seemed to bear the first witness to their terrifying, poisonous relationship.
