Andre came to campus in a black car, wearing the smile of a man certain the world would clear a path for him. He hugged Sefti in front of the classroom.
“Our parents have arranged a dinner,” he said.
Sefti pulled away. “I never agreed to this relationship.”
Andre glanced at Zixo. “Is he your new friend?”
“He’s none of your business,” Sefti replied.
Andre laughed. “Of course. I just want to make sure you don’t choose wrong.”
Sefti led Zixo away. As they walked, she explained that their families had been building a business together for years. Their marriage was considered the best way to preserve that relationship.
“I’m not part of a business agreement,” Sefti said quietly.
Zixo wanted to hold her hand, but he hesitated. Andre saw that hesitation and smiled as though he had already won before the match had even begun.
That night, Zixo received a message from Sefti: “Don’t leave just because he showed up.”
Zixo read the message over and over. Then he replied, “I’m not leaving. I’m just afraid you’ll be forced away from me.”
