She was like a little white rabbit skipping off to pay for her medicine. I stood there leisurely watching, while Huống Vi pulled me aside and whispered, “People always throw their weight around for three days after getting promoted. But you’ve only been Mrs. Giang for one day, and your rival is already picking a fight with you. What’s there to worry about? Pay me enough, and I’ll even take care of your husband’s mistress during her confinement.”
Huống Vi gave me a thumbs-up, praising my broad-mindedness. But then she changed her tone and said she thought the way Giang Chỉ called me “wife” sounded incredibly sincere and affectionate. This time, the outsider was hopelessly confused while the people involved saw everything clearly. Giang Chỉ and I had been at each other’s throats for years. If I couldn’t even recognize this little jab, wouldn’t all those years have been wasted?
Giang Chỉ would never pass up an opportunity to piss me off. Of course, neither would I. But then Huống Vi changed the subject and asked when I’d started becoming such a money grubber.
Because Giang Chỉ had hurt his foot, the wedding that was supposed to take place a month later had to be postponed. Both families sent their regards and expressed their regret. The regards were for Giang Chỉ’s speedy recovery. The regret was because they were afraid something might happen if the delay dragged on.
So both families unanimously agreed to put me entirely in charge of taking care of Giang Chỉ, euphemistically calling it “building our relationship.” My mom personally made pork trotter soup and ordered me to deliver it to Giang Chỉ’s company.
As a result, I didn’t even make it to the elevator.
We weren’t deliberately hiding our relationship, but we hadn’t announced it publicly, either. We had only told our close relatives about the wedding. So I wasn’t surprised when the receptionist stopped me.
As I pulled out my phone, I saw Lục Vãn Lăng walk in. She was wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and carrying a lunchbox. When she saw me, she paused slightly, then quickly headed straight for the elevator.
The receptionist behind me let out a sigh and said that Lục Vãn Lăng had come again. As long as General Manager Giang was at the company, it was practically guaranteed that she’d show up.
She looked at me and sighed. “Didn’t you say you were General Manager Giang’s wife? How come Lục Vãn Lăng doesn’t know you? She’s the company’s top celebrity. You’re just another woman trying to seduce General Manager Giang, aren’t you? There have already been more than ten women like you this month.”
She sneakily asked whether I was looking for General Manager Giang to become my sugar daddy.
I was still mulling over the word “again” when Giang Chỉ’s assistant came hurrying over and called out loudly, “Mrs. Giang! I’m sorry to have kept you waiting!”
He spoke so loudly that everyone in the lobby turned to look. In an instant, everything fell silent. The only sound was the receptionist behind me sucking in a deep breath.
Assistant Wang took the thermos from my hands and ushered me into the elevator, saying, “You don’t come here often, so no one recognized you. I’ve already notified all the departments. General Manager Giang just finished a meeting, and his phone was on silent, so he didn’t know you were here. Once he sees you, he’s going to be thrilled.”
After getting off the elevator and turning twice, I saw him and Lục Vãn Lăng sitting across from each other, eating and chatting happily.
Sure enough, he was having a great time. I, on the other hand, was not happy at all.
The office door was open. Our eyes met, and Assistant Wang’s expression changed.
I lifted the thermos and turned to leave. “Looks like I came at a bad time. If I’d known she was here, I wouldn’t have bothered coming.”
Giang Chỉ leaned against the table and was just about to reach for his crutch when he said, “Oh, so you’re not playing Lỗ Trí Thâm today? You’re switching to the role of Lâm Đại Ngọc?”
He glanced at the thermos and complained, “You brought something delicious and didn’t tell me in advance?”
Lục Vãn Lăng couldn’t get a word in. She moved to help Giang Chỉ, but he raised his crutch and conveniently dodged her hand. Her hands froze in midair, and she stood there, her face flushing bright red with embarrassment.
Giang Chỉ reached toward the thermos.
I walked around him and dropped into his chair. “I figured you didn’t need me anymore. Aren’t you full?”
Giang Chỉ shamelessly opened the thermos. “Ha-ha, I’m still hungry. The pork trotter soup our mom made smells amazing.”
He scooped some into his mouth and mumbled indistinctly, “Come eat with me, Honey.”
