Perhaps truth is death itself; perhaps remembering what has been forgotten is exactly what makes us cling tightly to life once more. Or perhaps it leaves us with nothing but maybes until we die. But a person is born once, lives once, and dies once. That is what makes us who we are. We play so many computer games that sometimes we start believing we can die and be born again with another chance. That is why we need to return to the life that is at the core of what makes us human.
TO OURSELVES...
“A person often stays where they are not because they are trapped in darkness, but because they fear the price of stepping into the light.”
Knowing a truth does not mean you can live by it.
A person learns this most of all through their own life.
Many people actually know what is wrong. They know what upsets them, what exhausts them, and what drains them. Sometimes they even know what the solution is.
But knowing is one thing, changing is another.
Because change does not just unsettle the mind; it unsettles life itself.
Sometimes a person admits they are unhappy but cannot find the courage to let go of that unhappiness. Because the life they are used to is familiar, even when it causes pain. And what is familiar often looks safe.
Think about it…
If you took someone who had lived in the same room for years and suddenly brought them to a completely different home, they would feel uneasy on the first night, no matter how beautiful the new house was. Because people become attached not only to comfort, but also to familiarity.
Many of the wrong things in our lives are like that too.
They are not good for us, but they are familiar.
That is why some people do not change even after learning the truth. Because after the truth comes a question:
“So what am I going to do now?”
That is where the real fear begins.
It is easy to question a relationship.
Ending it is hard.
It is easy not to love a job.
Quitting is hard.
It is easy to realize that you have been neglecting yourself.
Making yourself a priority is hard.
Because every change comes at a price.
And most of the time, people cannot bear uncertainty—not pain.
Uncertainty…
Not knowing what will happen.
Wondering whether you are doing the right thing.
The fear of losing.
The worry that you might end up alone.
That is why some people stay in the same place for years.
Because the pain they know feels less frightening than the possibility they do not.
But there is a quiet truth here.
Staying where you are is also a decision.
Sometimes doing nothing is the biggest choice of all.
And time accepts the decisions you never made as decisions, too.
People often realize this too late.
One day, when you look back, you see:
The roads you never took…
The sentences you never said…
The lives you never began…
And most of all, the self you kept putting off.
But courage is not always about taking great leaps.
Sometimes it is simply a small act of honesty.
Being able to say, “I’m not happy like this.”
Being able to say, “I’m tired.”
Being able to say, “I want to hear myself now.”
People think change happens all at once.
No.
Change begins inside first.
First, a sentence changes.
Then a thought.
Then a habit.
And finally, life.
That is why knowing the truth is not enough.
You have to remain true to it.
After hearing your own voice, you have to try not to silence it again.
Maybe you will not be able to change anything today.
Maybe not tomorrow, either.
But if tonight you looked at yourself honestly for the first time, know that change has already begun.
Because the greatest transformations in a person’s life happen on nights no one applauds.
Quietly.
Slowly.
But irreversibly.
A Note Left for the Night
Sometimes knowing the truth does not set you free; first, it makes you restless. Because when the truth no longer fits inside your old life, you have to grow.
Don’t be too hard on yourself right away. Not every change happens in a single night. But there are some nights after which a person can no longer fully return to their old way of thinking.
Maybe tonight is one of them.
The night ended.
But some truths stay awake inside a person until morning.
