📖 Chapter 1: The Scent of Rain and Blood
The border forest of Blackwood Pack was shrouded in thick fog and bone-chilling drizzle that night. Darkness reigned over the towering pine trees, but to the Alpha's golden-red eyes, night was always as bright as day. Alpha Raga stood atop a rocky cliff, gazing down at his pack's territory with the characteristically impassive expression he always wore. The tense muscles beneath his soaked black shirt revealed a vigilance that never slept. As the leader of the strongest pack in the north, Raga knew danger was always lurking in the shadows. But tonight, that danger came not in the form of an enemy's claws, but on a gust of wind. Raga sniffed the air. His keen sense of smell caught a foreign scent that instantly pierced through the defenses of his reason. It was an intoxicating blend of petrichor (the scent of wet earth after rain), the sweetness of wild vanilla, and... coppery metal. Blood. > "Ours. Find her." > The voice of the wolf within his head, usually obedient to Raga's cold rationality, suddenly growled with possessive savagery. His wolf thrashed, demanding to be released. Without wasting a second, Raga shot through the trees, moving with such lightning speed that his figure was nothing more than a black shadow cleaving through the fog. He ignored his own pack's security protocols. His primitive instincts had taken control. ### At the Edge of the Ravine In a clearing near the swift-flowing border river, Raga came to an abrupt stop. Three of his border guards were surrounding a small figure cornered at the edge of a ravine. The figure was a woman. Dressed entirely in black, she looked more like she was wearing human military tactical gear than the tattered cloth Rogue usually wore. Rain soaked her long, tangled hair, while her right hand gripped a silver dagger slick with thick blood. The woman was gravely injured. A long gash ran down her arm, spilling blood that did not immediately close. A silver wound. "Surrender, Rogue!" growled one of Blackwood's border guards in his half-shifted form. "You've trespassed into Alpha Raga's territory. Your punishment is death!" The woman—Elara—only gave a crooked smile, a contemptuous expression that looked wildly out of place considering how cornered she was. "You guard dogs bark too much. Come at me if you dare." Raga stepped out from behind the trees. His presence radiated such a dense, oppressive Alpha Aura that his three guards instantly dropped to their knees, pressing their faces into the muddy ground. "Stand down," Raga ordered. His voice was low, hoarse, and powerful enough to make the earth beneath their feet tremble. Elara lifted her head, breathing heavily. That was when Elara's bright silver eyes collided directly with Raga's blazing red ones. Time seemed to stop. The falling rain felt frozen in the air. Raga's heart pounded so loudly it drowned out the sound of the river surging below the ravine. An invisible electric shock raced from his toes to his spine, binding their souls in a single ancient breath no werewolf could resist. > *"MATE!"* > Raga's wolf howled in triumph inside his mind. The famously merciless Alpha stood frozen, every icy defense around his heart shattering at a single glance from a blood-soaked Rogue. ### The Fugitive's Trick "You..." Raga's voice caught in his throat. He stepped slowly toward Elara, as though afraid a sudden movement might cause her to break. His hand, usually used to snap his enemies' necks, reached out now, trembling with an overwhelming urge to touch her face. But Elara was not some helpless woman waiting to be rescued. Elara felt the pull of the bond—a nauseating tug her mother had always told her about before she died. Mate. A foolish fate that would bring nothing but suffering. She stared at the handsome, arrogant face before her with a flash of hatred. "Don't touch me, Alpha," Elara hissed sharply. Before Raga realized what was happening, Elara reached into the tactical pouch at her waist and threw a small cylindrical canister onto the ground between them. BAM! Thick white smoke exploded into the air. It was no ordinary smoke, but a mixture of human tear gas and a low dose of Wolfsbane powder. The smoke immediately seared Raga's sensitive sense of smell and vision. The Alpha coughed violently, his eyes burning and his instincts disrupted for several crucial seconds. "See you around, Big Dog," Elara whispered from behind the billowing smoke. When Raga waved the smoke away and lunged forward, he managed to grasp nothing but empty air. Elara had thrown herself backward, plunging freely into the ravine and disappearing into the dark, raging river below. Raga stood at the edge of the ravine, his chest heaving with ragged breaths. The rain fell harder, but it could not wash away the scent of vanilla and blood now etched forever into the Alpha's mind. Raga clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white, staring toward the dark river flowing in the direction of the human city's territory. "You won't be able to run from me, Mate," Raga vowed in the silence of the night. "I'll turn this entire world upside down to find you."
