Andini Sukmadewi never intended to dance the lumping horse dance. She is an ordinary Gambyong dancer, the granddaughter of Nyai Kartika, a woman who fled Karangtengah village eighty years ago, one day before the Closing Movement ceremony, leaving an ancestral spirit named Branjangan bound halfway through it. When that spirit finally finds a way to return, through Andini’s own cousin, who goes into a trance in the middle of a performance, Andini realizes she is the only blood descendant left who can complete what her grandmother abandoned.
