[Fragment recovered from "The Forgotten Chronicles of Eneglen" – Record of the Vanished Chronicler #07]
"History is written by the victors, but erased by the arrogant. The old Emperor, in his obsession with scrubbing the continent clean of any trace of resistance, sorted his enemies into two categories: traitors to be eliminated, and myths not worth his attention. To him, the Brown Mages belonged to the second. Convinced that magic was only real if it manifested in great fortresses or armies, he died believing their absence from the battlefield was proof they had never existed.
That arrogance became an inheritance. The young King Micelo, more concerned with the shine of his banquet halls than the shadows of his forests, doesn't even bother to speak their name; to the crown, the Brown Mages are peasant superstition—old wives' tales invented to explain why a harvest survives the blight.
Yet in the corridors of the Blue and White academies, the silence is a different kind. The mages who serve the throne today don't know that the Purge was never finished. They, who betrayed their own bloodlines, cast uneasy glances toward the corners where necromancers hide, and turned the Brown Mages into a myth rather than admit there is a force that outnumbers their reach and slips free of their inquisitorial authority. They don't know that Brown Mage knowledge isn't kept in imperial libraries—it lives in scarce, anonymous practice books, circulating like an underground current across all of Eneglen.
But what would unsettle the scholars who sold their souls most of all is the Oath. While they enjoy wealth stained with blood, the Brown Mages are bound by a pact that knows no forgiveness. In their circles, betrayal is not punished with a dungeon cell—it is punished by the magic itself. The Oath is a living law: whoever breaks their word feels their own power turn parasite, devouring their life from the inside out. It is a loyalty that cannot be bought or broken, and it is precisely that purity that makes them the greatest threat to an empire built on lies.
While the palace laughs and the academies pretend they have won, in the underworld of the cities and along the edges of the ports, the myth has begun to walk."
