Chapter 28: Proof of Existence

Above every person floats a number called their Love Value: how many people would hold a place for them. When it drops to zero, you don't die. The world simply deletes you; your name, photos and every memory of you vanish, as though you never were. Seventeen-year-old Jiang Yu has good grades, a whole family and never bothers anyone. His favorite word is "fine." His Love Value is minus one. On the day a classmate vanishes in front of his eyes, a girl with no name shows up. Erased three years ago, invisible and forgotten by everyone, she can be seen by him alone. "Lying again," she tells him. She doesn't console anyone; she only tells the truth, because she knows the ones who really disappear aren't the unloved, but the people who never stop insisting they're fine.
