Rain was still falling when Bayu stood several yards in front of Raka.
He looked exhausted.
There was a cut at the corner of his mouth, and dried blood at his temple.
But Raka didn't care.
There was only one thing on his mind.
Bayu's name.
INTERNAL OVERSIGHT — OPERATION RAVEN.
Raka raised the black file folder.
"Explain."
Bayu stared at the documents.
"You weren't supposed to read them."
"Wrong answer."
Raka stepped closer.
"I'm asking who you really are."
Bayu drew a breath.
"I am an internal overseer."
Raka fell silent.
Seno stood behind him.
"Told you."
Raka turned.
"Stay out of this."
Seno raised both hands.
"I'm just stating a fact."
Raka turned his attention back to Bayu.
"Why didn't you ever tell me?"
"Because the assignment wasn't to watch you."
"Then what was it?"
Bayu answered quietly.
"To make sure you stayed alive."
Raka laughed bitterly.
"And you call that surveillance?"
"Because that's exactly what it was."
Bayu opened his jacket and pulled out a document.
"After Operation Raven failed, there was an order to eliminate every team member who knew too much."
Raka fell silent.
Bayu continued.
"I was ordered to watch over all of you."
"Who gave the order?"
Bayu looked at him.
"Arman."
Raka froze.
That name had appeared again.
Arman.
His former commander.
The man he'd always believed was responsible for destroying his life.
"So Arman told you to watch me?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Bayu let out a sigh.
"Because you brought something out of the operation site."
Raka furrowed his brow.
"What?"
Bayu pointed to his head.
"Information."
Raka fell silent.
"You were the only one who saw who actually leaked our position."
Raka tried to remember.
His head began throbbing again.
The sound of a radio.
Vehicle lights.
Someone running.
Then a face.
Raka closed his eyes.
Seno said,
"Don't force your memory."
Raka opened his eyes.
"I almost have it."
Bayu looked at Seno.
"You shouldn't have brought him here."
Seno answered coldly.
"If I hadn't, they'd have kept using him."
"Who are they?"
Raka cut in.
Bayu fell silent.
Then he said,
"The people controlling Adrian Wibawa now."
Raka frowned.
"Adrian isn't the leader?"
Bayu shook his head.
"He's just one of the faces out front."
Seno added,
"The person really controlling everything never shows himself."
Raka looked at the two of them.
"Who?"
Bayu didn't answer.
Neither did Seno.
Raka began to lose his patience.
"Who?"
Bayu finally said,
"Colonel Arman."
Raka froze.
In an instant, every sound around him seemed to vanish.
The rain.
The wind.
The vehicles.
Everything felt far away.
"Arman?"
Bayu nodded.
"He's still alive."
Raka took a step back.
For years, he had believed Arman had abandoned everything.
The truth was the exact opposite.
Arman had been behind the shadows.
Controlling Adrian.
Watching Bayu.
Using Seno.
And maybe...
Using Raka.
"Why does he need me?"
Bayu answered,
"Because you're the only one who has the last piece of Operation Raven."
Raka stared at him.
"I don't have anything."
Bayu shook his head.
"You do."
"What?"
"Your memory."
Raka fell silent.
Seno then said,
"That's why they never killed you."
Raka looked at Seno.
"They want me to remember."
"Yes."
"And now?"
Seno looked at the black file folder.
"Now they're afraid you'll remember it."
Suddenly, the sound of a vehicle came from the distance.
Bayu turned at once.
"We have to go."
Raka didn't move.
"Why?"
Bayu pointed toward the road.
"Too many vehicles."
Several lights appeared beyond the fog.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then more and more.
Seno saw them.
"They found us."
Raka shoved the file folder inside his jacket.
"Where?"
Bayu pointed toward the forest.
"That way."
The three of them ran from the building.
The sound of the vehicles drew closer.
Headlights swept across the road.
Raka ran between the trees with the file folder in hand.
In the middle of their escape, his head began to ache again.
A memory surfaced.
He saw Arman standing in front of a table.
The same file folder lay on the table.
Arman said,
"If Raka finds out who the traitor is, it's all over."
Then someone stood behind him.
Raka tried to see the person's face.
Blurred.
But slowly, the face began to come into view.
Raka stopped running.
Bayu grabbed his arm.
"Why'd you stop?"
Raka didn't answer.
He stared blankly ahead.
"I remember."
Seno stopped.
"What?"
Raka looked at both of them.
"I know who the traitor is."
Bayu froze.
"Who?"
Raka drew a breath.
One name left his lips.
"Arman."
Bayu shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Raka looked at him.
"I saw him."
Seno, however, looked frightened.
"Raka..."
"What?"
Seno said quietly,
"That's not the worst part."
Raka furrowed his brow.
"Why?"
Seno looked at him.
"Because Arman isn't the last traitor."
The sound of the vehicles drew closer.
Seno pointed toward the file folder.
"The person who betrayed us is in those documents."
Raka opened the file folder.
The last page he'd seen earlier was beginning to get wet from the rain.
The ink on the page slowly faded.
But before it disappeared completely, Raka saw another name.
A name that made his blood seem to stop flowing.
LARAS WIRATAMA.
Raka stared at the writing.
Laras.
The woman who had always seemed calm from the beginning.
The woman who knew too much about his past.
The woman who had stood closest to him all this time.
Raka closed the file folder.
Bayu whispered,
"Don't trust anyone."
In the distance, the headlights drew closer.
And that night, Raka finally understood that his journey into becoming a robber hadn't been a coincidence.
He had been chosen.
Watched.
And maybe from the very beginning...
the entire crew had been formed solely to bring him back to the truth.
