Serena ended up canceling lunch with Varron because of their argument. After Varron kept bringing up Niel, Serena finally decided not to ride in the same car with him.
She forced Varron to let her out on the side of the road. He had no choice but to agree, though in the end, he was at a loss for how to convince Serena to forgive him.
“I’m sorry, Serena. I won’t do it again. I promise I won’t bring up that strange man in front of you anymore.” Varron grabbed Serena’s arm, but she immediately yanked it free.
“At home, I’m already sick of him, but you… you keep bringing him up every time you see me. I warned you, but you didn’t listen, Varron.”
“Yes, I’m sorry, Serena. I… I was too afraid of losing you. I’m sorry, Serena.”
Without wasting any more time, Serena hurried away from Varron on the sidewalk not far from his car. Varron didn’t chase after her. He simply let Serena leave on her own. Serena had never wanted to be chased when she was angry.
Once she was far enough away from Varron, Serena immediately hailed a taxi home. She had lost her appetite back in the car. Even her longing for Varron had disappeared along with her irritation.
“How could he keep bringing up that weird man? Damn it! Doesn’t he know how annoying that weird man is at home?” Serena grumbled inwardly.
“Dad will be back next month. You and Niel need to keep in touch. You’re siblings, so don’t fight, and don’t distance yourself from him.”
The call ended after Liam briefly explained to Serena that he and Mora would be extending their time abroad.
Serena didn’t say much or object. She chose to let her father have his way, even though deep down, she was extremely upset and a little resentful.
“How could Dad entrust me to a stranger who hasn’t even been in this house for a year? I don’t even know what kind of bad behavior he’s hiding.”
The sound of the phone ringing caught Serena’s attention again. She thought it was Liam, calling to apologize for leaving her alone for so long. But she was completely wrong.
It was Helena calling. Whatever emergency the woman was facing out there, it had to be serious. Helena rarely contacted Serena unless something urgent had happened.
“What’s wrong, Helena? Aren’t you working? Is there something I can help with?” Serena asked as she lay down on the bed.
“Varron was in an accident, Serena. Someone hit his car, and now… now he’s in critical condition.”
Serena abruptly sat up. Her body suddenly felt weak after hearing Helena’s explanation.
“Y-you’re not joking, are you?”
“No. I’m at the hospital with Bella right now. I hope you can get here soon, Serena.”
The call ended not long afterward, leaving Serena frozen in place from the shock. Ten minutes later, she finally came to her senses and burst into tears.
“Wait, he was fine earlier. This can’t be happening, right? How could he… why did he…” Serena began to cry.
Feeling weak and drained, Serena slowly grabbed her bag and changed clothes so she could get ready to go to the hospital. Once she was done, she went outside to drive the car she hadn’t used in quite some time. Serena had nearly gotten into an accident with that car before.
