That morning, Renzo went through his day as usual. Nothing seemed different from any other day. The alarm on his phone went off several times before he finally woke up, his eyes still heavy.
“Why does morning have to come so fast?” Renzo muttered as he looked at the clock beside his bed.
He sat on the edge of the bed for a moment, trying to gather his thoughts. Renzo’s room wasn’t very large, but it was comfortable enough for him. In one corner stood an old bookshelf that was beginning to overflow with things he rarely touched. A few books, old photos, and small items he’d been meaning to organize for a long time.
After getting ready, Renzo left his room and headed for the kitchen.
“Renzo, are you going out today?” his mother asked while making breakfast.
“Yeah, Mom. There are a few things I want to look for at the old house,” Renzo replied as he took a glass of water.
“The old house? Haven’t you gone there in a long time?”
Renzo nodded.
“Yeah, Mom. I didn’t actually plan on going there either. It just crossed my mind yesterday.”
His mother only gave him a small smile.
“Sometimes there are things we have to look at again, even if we left them behind a long time ago.”
Renzo didn’t answer right away. He simply fell silent, thinking about his mother’s words.
After finishing breakfast, Renzo left for the family’s old house, which was rarely used anymore. The house was some distance from where he lived now. Its structure was still standing strong, although parts of it had clearly begun to succumb to time.
When he arrived, Renzo opened the door with the old key he still kept.
The door creaked open softly, making the atmosphere inside the house feel different.
“It’s still the same as before,” Renzo said quietly.
Dust coated several places. The smell of old wood hit him the moment he stepped inside. The house held many memories, even though Renzo himself didn’t remember all of them very well.
He walked around the rooms. There was a small table near the window, an old cabinet in the living room, and several boxes he had never opened again.
Renzo had only wanted to look for a few of his belongings that he’d left behind. But when he opened one of the cabinets, something fell from the back of the shelf.
A brown envelope.
Renzo picked it up with a confused look on his face.
“What is this?”
The envelope looked old. Its exterior was slightly faded, but it was still clear that it had been deliberately stored with care.
Renzo turned the envelope over.
There was no sender’s name.
No address.
There was only one small line written on the front.
“For whoever finds this letter.”
Renzo furrowed his brow.
“That’s so weird.”
He sat on the floor and examined the envelope. A sudden sense of curiosity stirred inside him.
At first, he wanted to put it away and open it later. But the longer he looked at the writing, the more curious he became.
Finally, Renzo opened the envelope.
Inside was a sheet of paper that had begun to yellow.
The handwriting on the paper was neat, but parts of it had started to fade with age.
Renzo began to read.
“Hi. If you’re reading this letter, I might no longer be in the same place I was before.”
Renzo paused for a moment.
The very first sentence already made him feel uneasy.
He continued reading.
“I don’t know who will find this letter. But I hope that person can understand why this letter was written.”
Renzo stared seriously at the paper.
“What is this letter supposed to be about?” he whispered.
The letter didn’t immediately explain who had written it. There was no name and no clear date. There was only a story about someone who had once hidden something important in that house.
The more Renzo read, the more questions came to him.
One section mentioned a major decision, someone who had left without explaining why, and a promise that had never been kept.
Renzo stopped reading when he came across a sentence that left him speechless.
“There is someone who needs to know this truth.”
He stared at the sentence for quite a while.
“The truth about what?”
Renzo tried to find another section, but the letter was only one page long. There was nothing more.
He turned the paper over several times, hoping there might be hidden writing.
But there was nothing.
Suddenly, footsteps sounded outside the house.
“Renzo?”
Renzo immediately turned around.
A man was standing in the doorway.
“Rian? What are you doing here?”
Rian stepped inside, looking around the house.
“I saw your motorcycle out front. I wondered who it was. Turns out it was you.”
Renzo quickly folded the letter.
“What are you doing here?”
“I should be asking you that. You hardly ever come to this place.”
Rian sat in the old chair near the door.
“Are you looking for something?”
Renzo looked at the letter in his hand.
“I found something.”
Rian immediately took interest.
“What kind of something?”
Renzo handed the letter to Rian.
Rian read it for a moment, then his expression turned curious.
“This is an old letter?”
“Yeah.”
“Who wrote it?”
“That’s the problem. I don’t know.”
Rian looked at the front of the letter.
“No name?”
Renzo shook his head.
“None.”
The two of them fell silent for a few moments.
Rian was usually the kind of person who liked to joke around, but this time he looked serious.
“Renzo, are you sure you want to find out about this?”
Renzo stared at the letter.
“I don’t know why either, but it feels like something hasn’t been finished yet.”
Rian let out a sigh.
“Once you get curious, you’re definitely not going to stop until you find the answer.”
Renzo gave him a small smile.
“Maybe.”
They looked over the letter together again. They tried to search for clues in every word that had been written.
One section left Renzo even more confused.
It mentioned a place called Taman Selatan.
Renzo tried to remember it.
“Taman Selatan…”
“You know that place?” Rian asked.
Renzo slowly shook his head.
“For some reason, the name feels familiar.”
Evening began to fall. Sunlight streamed through the windows of the old house.
Renzo put the letter back into the envelope.
He still didn’t know who had written it.
He still didn’t know who the letter was referring to.
He also didn’t know what secret was actually hidden there.
But there was one thing he could feel.
That little letter he had found by accident might not be an ordinary letter after all.
And without Renzo realizing it, that day became the beginning of a long journey that would change many things in his life.
