In a small village by the sea, there lived a young man named Riven. He was known as a brave young man who was always curious about things the villagers considered strange. Since childhood, Riven had often heard stories about a mysterious shadow that appeared on the beach when night fell. The villagers called it the Salty Shadow because everyone who saw it always caught the powerful scent of the sea.
"Never go to the beach during a full moon," warned Mr. Darma, an old fisherman who lived near Riven's house. "There's something there that doesn't come from our world."
Riven only gave a faint smile at his words.
"Mr. Darma, maybe it's just a story meant to scare children," Riven replied as he helped carry the fishing nets.
Mr. Darma looked at him seriously. "You don't have to believe me, Riven. But the sea holds many secrets humanity has never discovered."
Those words continued to echo in Riven's mind. He didn't want to prove the story wrong. He wanted to know what was really happening on that beach.
That night, when the entire village was asleep, Riven took a small lantern and walked toward the beach. The wind blew gently, carrying the sound of waves breaking through the silence. The sand felt cold beneath his feet, while the moonlight made the surface of the sea look like glass.
At first, there was nothing strange. Riven began to think that the villagers' story really was nothing more than a legend.
But just as he was about to turn back, a voice came from the direction of the sea.
"Riven..."
He stopped.
The voice was soft, like someone calling from a very distant place.
"Who's there?" Riven shouted.
There was no answer.
Then, behind the thin mist rising from the surface of the water, a black shadow appeared standing at the edge of the beach. Its shape resembled a human, but its body seemed to be made of seawater and mist.
Riven gripped the lantern tightly.
"Who are you?" he asked.
The shadow slowly approached. Each step left a trail of salt water in the sand.
"I am the forgotten guardian of the sea," the voice replied.
Riven fell silent. "The guardian of the sea?"
The shadow nodded.
"Long ago, humans maintained a relationship with the sea. They respected the waves, the wind, and every creature that lived within it. But now, too many simply take without caring."
Riven studied the figure. Although it looked frightening, he sensed no danger.
"Then why have you appeared here?" Riven asked.
The shadow looked toward the village.
"Something is disturbing the balance of the sea. An ancient object has been found by humans, and it carries the anger of the past."
Riven's curiosity stirred.
"What object?"
Before the shadow could answer, a thunderous sound came from the sea. The waves suddenly rose higher than usual. The water moved as if it were searching for something.
"It's too late," said the Salty Shadow.
Riven looked toward the sea, worry plain on his face.
"What should I do?"
The shadow raised its hand. A blue light emerged from its body and transformed into a small stone shaped like a drop of water.
"Take this back to where it came from. Only someone with courage and a sincere heart can return it."
Riven accepted the stone. When his hand touched it, he felt the chill of seawater along with a strange warmth.
"Where did it come from?"
"In a coral cave at the end of the cliff. But be careful—the path there will test your courage."
The next day, Riven told his friend Lio what had happened.
"You really saw a shadow from the sea?" Lio asked, unconvinced.
"I did. And I have to return this stone before something terrible happens."
Lio sighed.
"You really are always looking for trouble."
Riven gave a small laugh.
"Maybe. But if I don't try, who will?"
In the end, they set off together toward the cliff at the edge of the village. The journey was not easy. They had to cross a small forest and rocky paths, while powerful winds nearly made them lose their way.
When they arrived in front of the coral cave, the sound of the waves grew stronger.
Inside the cave, they found many ancient carvings on the walls. The images told of humans from long ago who had lived alongside the sea.
"This place is incredibly old," Lio whispered.
Riven went deeper inside until he found a small hole shaped like a drop of water.
He took out the stone the Salty Shadow had given him.
"This must be where it goes."
When he placed the stone inside, the entire cave trembled. Blue light filled the chamber, and the sound of the sea became like a long, lingering song.
But suddenly, a dark shadow appeared behind them.
"You can't return it."
Riven turned around. Another black figure stood inside the cave. Unlike the Salty Shadow, this creature radiated anger.
"I am a wounded part of the sea," it said. "Humans have hurt nature for far too long."
Riven stood tall.
"I know humans have made mistakes. But that doesn't mean every human should be punished."
The creature gave a soft laugh.
"You think one person can change everything?"
"Maybe not," Riven replied. "But one person can start a change."
His words left the cave in silence.
Then the light from the stone grew brighter. The Salty Shadow appeared again behind Riven.
"You have chosen correctly."
The dark creature slowly disappeared as the light filled the cave. The waves that had been raging began to calm.
From that day on, Riven's village changed. The villagers began caring for the beach, cleaning the sea, and respecting nature as they had in the past.
Many people still asked about what had happened that night. But Riven only smiled whenever he looked out at the sea.
Sometimes, when the full moon rose and the waves moved slowly, he could still see a shadow standing far out in the water.
The Salty Shadow.
The guardian of the sea, reminding humanity that nature is not something to be owned, but something to be respected.
