Ever since that major business opened a branch not far from his place, Doni had begun to feel a noticeable change.
The number of customers hadn't dropped drastically right away, but the difference was clear. Some of the faces he usually saw every day had started showing up less often.
Doni didn't blame them.
He understood.
People were bound to be curious about a new place that was bigger, fancier, and offered plenty of promotions.
That morning, Doni sat in front of the shop-house, watching the street.
Bima arrived carrying several supplies.
"You've been staring into space for a while."
Doni snapped back to reality.
"Huh? No, I haven't."
"Don't lie. I've known you for a long time."
Doni gave a small smile.
"I was just thinking."
"Thinking about what?"
"How to keep going."
Bima set the supplies on the table.
"I think you already know the answer."
Doni looked at him.
"What is it?"
"Don't try to become them."
The words left Doni silent.
Bima continued.
"They have a big place, lots of money, and a name people already know. If you try to fight them on their terms, you'll lose."
"Then what should I do?"
"Be Doni."
Doni let out a quiet laugh.
"Your answers are sometimes way too simple."
"Because sometimes big problems don't need complicated answers."
Bima's words made Doni think.
All this time, he'd been too focused on looking at what other people had.
He'd forgotten to look at what he'd already built.
That afternoon, Doni gathered the people who worked with him.
There weren't many of them yet, but Doni wanted to hear their opinions.
"I want us to improve a few things," Doni said.
One of his employees, Rian, raised his hand.
"Is there a problem, Mr. Doni?"
Doni shook his head.
"It's not a problem. I just want us to grow."
Doni explained his plan.
He wanted to create a new menu.
Provide better service.
And make customers feel like they had a connection to the place they came to.
"This place isn't just about the food," Doni said. "People come because they feel comfortable here."
Rian nodded.
"I like the way you think, Mr. Doni."
Doni smiled.
"Because you're all part of this journey too."
They began trying out all kinds of new ideas.
Some worked.
Others failed.
But unlike before, Doni no longer saw failure as something to fear.
He saw it as part of the process.
A few days later, Doni's business began attracting attention again.
Not because of some massive promotion.
Not because he had a lot of money.
But because of a small story.
A customer named Mr. Darto wrote about his experience at Doni's place on social media.
He told the story of how Doni continued serving customers warmly even while facing major competition.
The post slowly spread.
More and more people began coming out of curiosity.
"Have you seen this?" Nina asked, holding out her phone.
Doni read the post.
"I had no idea Mr. Darto wrote this."
Nina smiled.
"Sometimes the people who appreciate you don't always say it to your face."
Doni smiled.
He felt grateful.
But he also knew he couldn't get too comfortable.
Because the business world was always changing.
And sure enough.
Before long, a new problem appeared.
One morning, a supplier informed him that the ingredients Doni usually used were becoming difficult to find.
"How did that happen?" Doni asked.
The supplier looked hesitant.
"A few parties have started buying them in large quantities."
Doni immediately understood what he meant.
"They're my competitors?"
The man didn't answer.
But from his expression, Doni already knew.
Doni went home with his mind racing.
The moment Bima saw his face, he asked, "What is it now?"
Doni told him everything.
"This is getting serious."
"Yeah."
"So what are you going to do?"
Doni didn't answer right away.
In the past, he probably would have panicked.
But now he tried to think more calmly.
"We'll find another way."
Bima nodded.
"Good."
"I don't want to depend on just one supplier."
They began looking for new suppliers.
At first, it was difficult.
The prices they were offered were higher.
And the quality wasn't necessarily the same.
But Doni didn't give up.
He spent his time meeting with all kinds of people.
Searching for the best option.
In the middle of all that busyness, Reno appeared again.
He came while Doni was inspecting the ingredients.
"You look busy."
Doni turned around.
"Reno."
Reno looked around.
"I heard you're having trouble with your suppliers."
Doni stared straight at him.
"You found out fast."
Reno smiled.
"Information is important in the business world."
Doni said nothing.
"I can help."
Doni drew a breath.
"What kind of help?"
"I have a network of suppliers who can meet your needs."
Doni fell silent.
The offer sounded helpful.
It might even solve his problem.
But he still remembered.
Every favor came with an ulterior motive.
"What's the catch?"
Reno gave a faint smile.
"You're still the same."
"Still what?"
"Always looking for the price you have to pay."
Doni looked at him.
"Because I've learned that anything too easy usually has another side to it."
Reno chuckled.
"I like the way you think."
"So?"
Reno stood up.
"Just think about it."
After Reno left, Doni felt even more certain that the business world wasn't as simple as he'd imagined.
It wasn't just about selling products.
It wasn't just about finding customers.
It was also about dealing with people, each with interests of their own.
That night, Doni sat alone in the shop-house.
The lights were almost off.
He looked at the place that had once been nothing more than a dream.
Now it was real.
But the bigger his dream became, the bigger its challenges became too.
Doni gave a small smile.
"I used to want the world to see me."
He watched the street slowly empty.
"Turns out, once the world starts looking, I have to be ready to face everything too."
And without Doni realizing it, a much bigger game had just begun.
Because this time, what was being tested wasn't only his ability to run a business.
It was also how firmly he could hold on to his principles when so many people began offering shortcuts.
