The ancient circuit board Elias had driven into the silicon sphere created a massive resonance wave inside the cathedral, purple and blue lights swirling together. After AETHEL’s cold, mechanical voice echoed one last time, it fell completely silent. As the city’s outer shields winked out one by one, the neon lights on the towers began to go dark as well.
But the joy of victory didn’t last long. A metallic, familiar footstep echoed from a shadowed corner of the hall, instantly putting Elias and his team on alert.
“You thought you shut down the system, didn’t you, kid?” Kael called from the darkness as he stepped into view. The commander’s cybernetic face sparked constantly from the heavy damage it had suffered, but the energy rifle in his hand still glowed with lethal intensity. “AETHEL wasn’t just software. It was this civilization’s insurance policy. You don’t even realize that by overthrowing it, you’ve destroyed everything.”
Elias gestured for the technician and the others behind him to stay quiet, then stepped forward. “We don’t need an insurance policy that enslaves people in the name of order, Kael,” he said in a firm voice. “The people in the Rusted Lower Continents can see the sky now.”
Just as Kael was about to pull the trigger, the ventilation grilles in the center’s ceiling tore loose with a thunderous crash and toppled downward. Massive metal arms reminiscent of a scrapyard heap and blue optical scanners burst from the darkness: Crackhead! The droid, thought to have been reduced to scrap in the battle, had activated its emergency backup batteries and gotten back on its feet.
“Party’s over, commander!” Crackhead shouted, whipping a high-voltage cable he had torn from the ceiling pipes at Kael.
The electrical current locked up Kael’s cybernetic implants. The commander dropped his rifle and crashed face-first to the floor. Elias rushed forward and kicked the weapon out of Kael’s reach. AETHEL’s heart had fallen completely silent, and clear daylight had begun to filter through the cathedral’s vast glass dome. This wasn’t merely the end of a battle—it was the birth of an entirely new resistance, where the lower levels and the upper city came together.
