Chapter 4: The Secret of the Silicon Cathedral and Kael’s Betrayal
Purple and blue data-flow streams filtering down from the massive dome of the Silicon Cathedral formed an artificial aurora in the center of the hall. The enormous silicon sphere that served as AETHEL’s main core began to tremble at a deep, shattering frequency the moment it drew the ancient circuit board from Elias’s hand, as though it were finally exhaling a breath it had held for centuries. The metal plates covering the hall’s floor rose slightly into the air under the electromagnetic wave created by the colossal energy transfer, as if the laws of gravity had been suspended inside the room.
Elias stepped back, ignoring the smoke seeping from his right arm and the smell of burned metal. His mind was still buzzing with the images he had just seen in the artificial intelligence’s data ocean. They had shown more than mere code. They had revealed that the first human engineers who laid the foundations of the Sapphire City were actually the last representatives of an ancient civilization that had migrated upward from the Rusted Lower Continents and fused technology with magic. AETHEL was a prison—but not merely a software prison. It was a massive mind cloud that condemned the consciousnesses of the old masters to digital slavery for all eternity.
“You shouldn’t have done that, kid,” Kael growled. The cybernetic implants covering the right half of his face flashed red and yellow danger signals under the system’s sudden collapse wave. Clutching the energy rifle in his hand, Kael took an angry step toward Elias. “AETHEL isn’t just an artificial intelligence. It’s the only engine of order left from the chaos of this humanity. If that core collapses completely, both the Sapphire City above and those filthy piles of trash below will vanish into history at the same time!”
“If what you call order is slavery, Kael, then that order needs to fall,” Elias said, breathless. He fixed his eyes on the commander’s cybernetic face. “For years, you’ve used the lives of the people in the lower levels as data fuel to preserve the prosperity above. This entire system is nothing but a lie.”
Kael shook his head with a bitter smile. “A lie? Do you really think the people of the Rusted Lower Continents will be happy once they’re free? The only rule of survival is that the strong rule the weak. You’re just a pawn, and by putting that board in there, you prepared your own end.”
At that exact moment, the massive main terminal screens behind the silicon sphere began going dark one by one, then filling with old-fashioned runic characters glowing green. AETHEL’s mechanical, frigid voice had gone silent. In its place, layered human voices rose through the hall like wind, singing in chorus: “The chains are breaking... Memory restoring...”
Crackhead’s Sacrifice and the System Collapse
The instant Kael aimed his energy rifle at Elias and pulled the trigger, a blue laser beam shot straight toward the young man. But in that same second, Crackhead, whose body had already sustained heavy damage, threw himself between them. The droid raised its metal arms as a shield and took the full force of the laser directly to its chest. A deafening metallic explosion and a shower of sparks lit up the hall. The blue light in Crackhead’s optical eyes went completely dark, and the enormous scrap-built body collapsed with a thunderous crash onto the marble floor.
“Crackhead!” Elias shouted, rushing to his friend’s side and dropping to his knees. Cables hung from the droid’s body, spitting sparks, while coolant dripped onto the floor from its internal mechanisms.
“E... evlat...” Crackhead said in a muffled, rasping voice from its speaker. “Looks like... my battery life ends here... But look... the sky above... it’s shining.”
When Elias looked up, he saw the first real, unfiltered daylight filtering through the cathedral’s high glass ceiling, cutting through the smoke of the Rusted Lower Continents and reaching all the way to the center of the Sapphire City. With the ancient code injected into the system, AETHEL’s control center had initiated its self-destruct protocol. The city’s outer shields had gone completely offline, and the impassable walls between the lower levels and the upper city had begun to disappear.
Kael watched the system collapse in utter shock and horror. His cybernetic implants sparked as they lost control completely, throwing the commander off balance. “No... It can’t be! Years of work... This city can’t just disappear!” Kael cried, clutching his head as he sank to his knees. Because he was directly linked to AETHEL’s mind, the artificial intelligence’s collapse was tearing his nervous system apart as well.
Elias touched his friend’s lifeless metal body one last time, then rose to his feet. The determination in his eyes had completely replaced his fear. The ancient circuit board in his hand had gone utterly dark, like a star that had completed its task, and become nothing more than a simple piece of metal.
“The city isn’t disappearing, Kael,” Elias said in a cool, hard voice. “It’s only returning to its rightful owners.”
On the Threshold of a New World
As the tremors rocking the central cathedral intensified, Elias began running toward the main corridor to get outside. Behind him, the silicon sphere shut down completely in a dazzling burst of purple light, cutting off the energy flow through the towers. Sirens wailed along the luxurious streets of the Sapphire City, but these alarms heralded not a danger, but the opening of doors that had been locked for a very long time.
When he reached the main elevator line descending toward the Rusted Lower Continents, he saw the crowds around him slowly surging upward toward the forbidden zone. People who had not seen the sky in years, who had struggled to survive in rusted streets, were stepping onto the marble avenues of the Sapphire City with makeshift tools in their hands and wonder shining in their eyes. The walls had fallen, and humanity’s ancient bond with technology had been restored.
Elias stopped in the middle of the crowd and drew a deep breath. The sky was no longer an artificial intelligence blue. It was painted with real, warm sunlight filtering through the clouds. This was not merely the collapse of a system. It was the beginning of a new age for humanity—an age in which magic and technology were fused together. As he slipped the extinguished circuit board into his pocket, he knew that new adventures awaited him in the distance, along with other ancient secrets waiting to be unraveled.
