On the one-hundred-twentieth floor of a glass tower in Dubai, silence was a luxury only a true ruler could afford. Valerian Black stood with both hands clasped behind his back, gazing at the city lights spread out below his feet like a sea of diamonds. Through this bulletproof glass, humanity looked so small. So fragile. So easy to control.
Valerian was not a king seated on a golden throne. To the outside world, he was a reclusive billionaire, a philanthropic genius who funded clean-energy research and cancer hospitals in developing countries. But in the dark underworld untouched by the light, his name was too terrifying even to whisper. He was the Heart of The Syndicate—the global criminal network that controlled the arms trade, transcontinental drug cartels, and even regime changes around the world.
The double oak doors behind him opened without a sound. Someone stepped inside, his breath slightly labored. It was Victor, his trusted lieutenant and head of intelligence for The Syndicate.
"Sir," Victor's voice broke the silence, carrying a tension rarely heard from the ice-cold man.
Valerian did not turn around. His eyes remained fixed on his own reflection in the window. His silver hair was neatly combed, his Tom Ford suit immaculate. He looked like a god descended to Earth, not a soul-eating demon. "Tell me, Victor. How close are they?"
"Very close, sir," Victor reported, stepping forward once while maintaining a safe distance. "The Joint Interpol, CIA, and MI6 Task Force just raided two of our ports in Rotterdam and a money-laundering facility in Macau. They found the shadow ledger. Its encryption is being cracked. In less than a week, the money trail will lead straight to your charitable foundation. Your true identity will be exposed."
The air in the room seemed to freeze. For any syndicate leader, this was a death sentence. Life in prison or a state-sanctioned execution.
Yet Valerian's lips curved into a faint smile. He turned, walked toward his black marble table, and poured himself a glass of bourbon.
"I see," Valerian murmured, his voice calm, almost melodic. "They finally managed to piece together the puzzle pieces I deliberately scattered."
Victor frowned, confusion creeping behind his professional expression. "Deliberately, sir? If they learn that you're The Syndicate's mastermind, all our assets will be frozen. You'll become the most wanted man in the world."
"That will only happen if Valerian Black is still alive to be captured, Victor," Valerian said as he took a sip of his drink. "This game has grown too boring. When the enemy thinks they've cornered the king on the chessboard, the only way to win decisively is by burning the board."
Valerian set down his glass and pressed a hidden panel beneath the table. A massive holographic screen lit up in the center of the room, displaying a glass cylinder filled with slowly swirling, luminescent blue liquid. Beneath it was a countdown code that had not yet been activated.
Victor's eyes widened. "Project Chimera? Sir, that's an extinction-level biological weapon. If that virus is released, millions of people will die within hours. We don't have a stable vaccine yet."
"We don't need one," Valerian cut in coldly. His eyes regarded the blue liquid with nearly religious awe. "This world needs to be shaken awake. They need absolute fear to unite them. And in the midst of that utter despair, they'll need a savior."
Valerian walked toward the holographic screen and touched the projected cylinder with his fingertip.
"Let them come, Victor. Let those tracking dogs think they're about to catch me. We'll begin the final stage. Prepare the facility in Geneva. Activate the Project Chimera countdown for next week."
"But sir, what about you? If that facility becomes the center of the crisis, you won't be able to get out..."
Valerian turned toward his lieutenant, his smile widening now to reveal an absolute, maddened ambition.
"I don't plan to get out alive, Victor. I'll die there. In front of the eyes of the entire world." He calmly straightened his tie. "A criminal will be forgotten or condemned by history. But a martyr... a hero who sacrifices his life for humanity? He'll be worshiped as a god forever."
That night, atop a Dubai skyscraper, the apocalypse officially knocked. And the devil prepared to don an angel's wings.
