The roar of combat helicopter rotors tore through the frozen night above the Swiss Alps. Three jet-black Eurocopter AS565 Panthers maneuvered through the snowstorm before landing with military precision on the icy grounds of the Ouroboros Facility. Dozens of tactical operators from the Joint Interpol, GIGN, and GSG-9 Task Force poured out. Their uniforms blended into the darkness, and they carried compact assault rifles equipped with thermal sights that scanned every corner.
Inside the mobile command center aboard one of the helicopters, Director Richard Vance stared at the monitor with his jaw clenched. Beside him, Special Agent Elena Rostova typed at lightning speed, hacking into the facility's external security system.
"Perimeter cameras are down. Alpha and Bravo Teams, you have clearance to enter. Status code: Red. Shoot to kill if there's armed resistance," Vance's voice echoed through the encrypted radio channel. "We're taking down The Syndicate's head tonight. Don't let Valerian Black get away."
"Director," Elena called out suddenly, her eyes fixed on the strange stream of data crossing her screen. "There's a massive spike in data traffic from inside the facility. Someone... someone is opening access to the global communications network from within."
"Is he trying to transfer funds? Or wipe the database?"
"No." Elena's face went pale as she recognized the encryption pattern. "This isn't a data transfer. It's a broadcast. He's transmitting live, forcing the bandwidth through every major communications satellite in Europe and North America. Director... he's taking over every television station and digital platform."
On the command center's main monitor, the facility's tactical diagram suddenly flickered and was replaced by a high-resolution video recording. It wasn't just on that helicopter—it was everywhere in the world, from the giant screens in New York's Times Square to televisions in living rooms in Tokyo. The same broadcast had been forced onto every screen.
The video showed a vast glass-walled atrium. In the center stood a massive cylindrical tank filled with boiling neon-blue liquid. And in front of it stood Valerian Black. The philanthropic billionaire's face looked battered, his expensive white shirt torn and stained with blood—a cosmetic detail he had meticulously prepared just minutes earlier. Behind him, a military-masked man was bound and appeared to be unconscious.
"To all the people of the world," Valerian's voice rasped, breathless, delivering a flawless performance of suffering. "My name is Valerian Black. If you're seeing this broadcast, it means I've run out of time."
At Interpol headquarters, in coffee shops, and on the streets of major cities, humanity stopped in its tracks. They stared at the screens, holding their breath.
"A few hours ago, my biomedical charitable facility in Geneva was infiltrated by an unknown radical extremist faction," Valerian continued, his eyes fixed on the camera with tragic desperation. "They hacked our systems and altered the formula for an experimental drug we were developing for autoimmune diseases... turning it into an extinction-level biological weapon. The liquid behind me is the Chimera Pathogen."
Valerian coughed fake blood into his hand, then stared at it with a dazed expression. "If this tank explodes, the pathogen will spread into the atmosphere within seconds. It will infect anyone within a radius of thousands of miles, damage their DNA, and kill millions before dawn."
"Cut the broadcast! Cut it now!" Vance shouted from the command center.
"I can't, Director! Its encryption uses a polymorphic architecture. He's locked it from inside our own system!" Elena replied, her hands trembling over the keyboard. Her sharp, analytical mind searched for an opening, but she realized she was facing a system designed by a mind far ahead of its time.
On the screen, Valerian turned to look at the enormous tank. "The international security authorities are on their way here. But they'll be too late. There are less than four minutes left on this detonator's countdown."
The camera moved automatically, zooming in on the red digital clock attached to the tank. The numbers continued to fall. 03:59... 03:58...
"The only way to stop this chain reaction is to release a thermal radiation wave from the facility's core reactor," Valerian said, turning back to the camera. Fake tears pooled in his eyes, making millions of people around the world feel his pain. "That radiation will neutralize the pathogen instantly. But... the process has to be activated manually from the isolation chamber."
The world held its breath. They understood what those words meant.
"Anyone inside this room when the thermal radiation is released will be burned to ash in a matter of microseconds." Valerian offered a faint smile, warm and sacrificial, the kind that would be etched forever into human history. "I've spent my entire life trying to save the lives of the people I love. I won't let these devils destroy our world. Not on my watch."
"Alpha Team! Breach the main door now!" Vance shouted frantically into his radio. "This isn't about taking down a mafia anymore! If that liquid really is a biological pathogen, we're all going to die! Stop him!"
The sound of a C4 explosion tore through the night air as the Ouroboros Facility's main steel door was blown apart. Special forces stormed inside through the white corridors, abandoning caution protocols to race against the clock.
Yet on the screen, Valerian walked slowly toward a sealed room beside the atrium, its walls made of thick glass. He placed his hand on the yellow main lever panel. The countdown read 00:45.
"To the world I love," Valerian whispered, his voice echoing in the ears of billions who had now begun to cry as they watched him. "Never surrender to the darkness. Keep fighting for the light."
Amid the global panic and the streaming tears, not a single person realized that the hand resting on the lever wasn't trembling at all. No one knew that behind that tragic hero's gaze lived the smile of a devil who had won the greatest chess game in human history.
