Night deepened in the ICU corridor of Hasan Sadikin Hospital. The sharp smell of medicine and the monotonous ding of the wall clock accompanied each anxious second. Nara remained faithfully seated beside Arka, her fingers never releasing their hold on Arka’s still-cold hand. The man kept his head bowed, his eyes fixed on the thick glass door behind which his father lay weak beneath a tangle of medical tubes.
Around one in the morning, the thick door finally opened. A cardiologist stepped out as he removed his medical mask, his expression slightly softened behind his clear glasses.
Arka shot to his feet, and Nara followed. “How is my father, Doctor?” Arka’s voice trembled, hoarse.
The doctor exhaled in relief and gave a faint smile. “We managed to get him through the crisis after the emergency procedure. His heartbeat has stabilized again, although he still needs to be closely monitored. The critical period has passed. You may go in for a moment to see him, Arka, but please remain calm, all right?”
A burden as heavy as tons of stone seemed to lift from Arka’s shoulders in an instant. He wiped his face and let out a long breath filled with gratitude. He turned toward Nara, his eyes glistening as he held back overwhelming emotion. Without hesitation, Arka pulled Nara into a tight embrace, as though she were the only support keeping him standing.
“Thank you, Ra… thank you,” Arka whispered between breaths. Nara returned the embrace with tenderness, slowly rubbing his back. “Go in, Arka. Your father is waiting for you.” Wearing sterile clothing, Arka slowly entered the ICU, while Nara waited in the doorway so she would not disturb them. The steady beeping of the heart monitor sounded in rhythm, accompanying each of Arka’s steps as he approached the side of the bed where his father lay.
The old man, whose hair had turned completely white, slowly opened his heavy eyelids. His weary gaze moved sluggishly, greeting Arka’s face, filled with both worry and relief.
“Ka…” Arka’s father’s voice was terribly weak, barely more than a whisper muffled by the oxygen mask.
Arka clasped his father’s frail hand, bent down, and kissed the back of it with deep respect. “Dad… it’s Arka. You’re amazing, Dad. You made it through the critical period. Forgive me, Dad…”
Arka’s father gave a faint smile behind his oxygen mask. His trembling hand moved slowly, patting the back of Arka’s hand. The old man’s gaze then shifted past Arka’s shoulder, settling on Nara standing calmly near the door. Arka realized where his father was looking. He turned slowly and gestured for Nara to come closer. Nara walked over gracefully and stood beside Arka, offering a warm, sympathetic smile.
“Dad… this is Nara,” Arka said, his voice filled with sincere tenderness. “The woman I’ve always told you about.” The old man’s eyes softened with a gentle light. They grew slightly watery as he looked at Nara up close. “Nara…” his father whispered with difficulty, but extraordinary warmth radiated from his voice. “The girl in Arka’s sketchbook… the one he drew every night in our old rented house…”
Nara felt her chest tremble violently. Tears of emotion that she had been holding back began to trail down her cheeks. She knelt slightly to bring herself level with the old man’s bed, clasping both hands around his frail fingers.
“Yes, Uncle… I’m Nara,” Nara replied, her voice trembling. “Forgive Arka, sweetheart…” Arka’s father whispered, his gaze carrying deep regret from the past. “When we had to flee to Bandung… Arka cried all night in his room. He felt as though he had lost half his soul because he never got the chance to say goodbye to you. All those years here, his hard work, every page he drew… it was all so he could return to you as a man worthy of you…”
Every word spoken by Arka’s father struck the deepest chambers of Nara’s heart with tremendous force. Every mystery, the hurt of believing she had been abandoned, and the questions that had lingered for seven years were answered at last by a truth so pure. Arka had never left her out of indifference. He had only been struggling through the darkness of night so he could welcome the dawn with Nara.
Arka lowered his head, holding back his tears beside his father’s bed. Nara held Arka’s hand with one of hers and his father’s hand with the other, bringing all three palms together in an unbroken warmth. “Uncle, you don’t need to apologize,” Nara said sincerely, looking at Arka’s father with her most beautiful smile. “Arka is the most incredible and responsible man I’ve ever known. I’m proud of him, Uncle.”
Arka’s father nodded slowly, closing his eyes again with a calm, peaceful breath. The anxiety that had filled the room was replaced by a sweet silence wrapping itself around their souls.
As dawn began to break over the eastern edge of Bandung, casting warm golden light through the hospital window, Nara and Arka stood side by side, looking out at the city. Beneath the morning glow driving away the last traces of night’s darkness, Nara realized that their love was no longer merely a beautiful memory from the past—but a strong, unshakable promise for the future.
