The antiseptic smell in the archive room felt colder now, needling its way into every gap between breaths.
Kaelen was still kneeling on the concrete floor. His original hand was clenched so tightly his knuckles had gone white, while his gaze remained fixed on Aira. In Kaelen's eyes, the blue glow at Aira's neck was no longer merely a marker of technology—it was a breathing monument to the tragedy that had destroyed his life.
Aira took a step back, only a centimeter. Her delicate fingers drew toward her chest.
"Kaelen..." Aira called, her voice trembling with emotional confusion she couldn't unravel. "Don't look at me like that."
"Like what?" Kaelen's voice came out low, hoarse, and cold. "Like I'm looking at a killer wearing her victim's face?"
"Kaelen, enough!" Mara Quell snapped from beside the console. "She didn't choose to be created this way! Soma did all of this to you, to her, and to that child!"
But Kaelen seemed not to hear Mara. Years of trauma erupted all at once, paralyzing the investigator's logic. He struggled to his feet and stared at Aira from close range.
"You're not Mira," Kaelen said, each word striking like cold iron. "You're just a vessel. A synthetic shell filled with the remnants of my daughter's suffering so you can walk, fight, and pretend to have a soul."
Aira froze. Her pupils widened, reflecting the red glow of the room's emergency lights.
"I... I'm not pretending," Aira whispered. Her voice broke, not from signal manipulation, but from pain that came purely from within her. "I feel it, Kaelen. When you're hurt, when you're afraid... that desire to protect you isn't just a string of code. It's mine."
"It's not yours!" Kaelen cut in, his voice rising and piercing the silence of the archive room. "That desire to protect me belonged to Mira! She was the one willing to enter that pod so I could be healed! You just stole her voice, stole her habits, and took the name Soma gave you!"
Those words struck Aira harder than bullets or an electric shock.
Aira stared at Kaelen. The blue glow at her neck dimmed, replaced by a hollow silence. The guilt she'd carried all this time, her confusion over her identity, and the faint hope that she could have a place at Kaelen's side—all of it shattered in an instant.
"A borrowed name..." Aira repeated softly.
She looked down at her own hands—synthetic hands capable of producing deadly blades, hands that had just clasped Kaelen's fingers on the train.
"You're right," Aira said. She looked at Kaelen with a candor that now felt cold and distant. "I'm not Mira. I never will be Mira. But I also refuse to become a walking tomb for someone you loved."
"Aira, wait—" Mara tried to interrupt.
Aira didn't wait. Before Kaelen or Mara could react, Aira turned away. Her swift, silent footsteps cut through the darkness beyond the archive room's partition door, vanishing into the facility's network of ventilation corridors.
"Aira!" Mara shouted.
Kaelen stood frozen in the middle of the room. His original hand was still raised halfway in the air, but Aira was already gone. All that remained was the cold shadow of the archive room and the printed photograph of Mira lying on the floor.
"Are you satisfied, Vance?" Mara snarled, glaring at Kaelen with deep anger. "You just drove away the only reason we have any chance of breaching Soma's defenses!"
Kaelen didn't answer. The heat in his chest abruptly gave way to freezing silence. He looked at Mira's photograph on the floor, then at the dark corridor where Aira had just disappeared.
For the first time since he found Aira in the slum corridors, Kaelen realized something horrifying: Aira did carry Mira's memories, but the way that girl looked at him, the way she chose not to kill him, and the way she was hurt tonight... belonged entirely to Aira herself.
And Kaelen had just destroyed her.
"Mara," Kaelen said, his voice suddenly shaking violently. "The facility's security signal... it just changed."
The main emergency siren of the Sector Three Facility erupted into a deafening wail. Red lights swept across every corner of the white walls.
From the hidden speakers above them, the droning voice of the city scanner went out across the entire sector:
*“SOMA CORP EMERGENCY ORDER. SECTOR THREE UNDER TOTAL LOCKDOWN. SEARCH FOR SUBJECT AIRA-9 AND TERRORIST KAELEN VANCE INITIATED.”*
