Chapter 1
The day's first sunlight slowly filtered through the high mountain ridges, awakening the forest blanketed in white mist from its deep silence.
On Doi Mae La Noi in Mae Hong Son, Mistveil Coffee Farm slowly emerged from the veil of fog, like a painting carefully brushed into existence by nature.
Dew clung to the bright red coffee cherries. The scent of damp earth after last night's rain mingled with the faint fragrance of coffee blossoms just beginning to bloom.
A young woman in a cream long-sleeved shirt and a worn apron walked between the rows, inspecting each coffee tree with practiced familiarity.
She was...
Pantawan Arunsiri.
A twenty-five-year-old woman who had grown up alongside this coffee farm.
She lightly touched a coffee cherry with her fingertip, then smiled with satisfaction.
"The crop looks better than last year's."
A voice came from behind her.
"That's because you take care of it like it's part of the family."
Pantawan turned around with a smile.
"You're up early again, Grandma."
Grandma Bua approached carrying a small bamboo basket, her expression as gentle as ever.
"Old people don't sleep very well."
They shared a quiet laugh before gathering the red coffee cherries into the basket together.
Pantawan's life had always been simple.
Mornings were for picking coffee.
Late mornings were for roasting the beans.
Afternoons were for opening the little café in front of the house.
Evenings were for sitting with Grandma and watching the sea of clouds.
She had never thought she could want anything more from life.
Until...
Grandma Bua stopped walking.
The hand holding the basket trembled slightly.
"Grandma!"
Pantawan hurried to support her as she began to collapse to the ground.
"Grandma... what's wrong?"
Grandma Bua breathed rapidly, her face paling with alarming speed.
"Pan..."
Her voice was faint.
"Go... to... the room..."
Pantawan's eyes began to fill with tears.
"No. We're going to the hospital first."
Grandma weakly shook her head before grabbing her granddaughter's hand tightly.
"Under... the wooden floor..."
"The... wooden chest..."
"Don't let..."
Her words faded away as her hand slowly loosened its grip.
"Grandma!"
Pantawan's cry echoed throughout the coffee farm.
The mist that had looked so beautiful that morning suddenly seemed thicker and colder than ever.
Three days later
The entire wooden house was unnaturally quiet.
After the funeral rites were over, Pantawan sat alone, gazing mournfully at a photograph of her grandmother placed in front of the funeral urn.
Her grandmother's final words still echoed in her mind.
"Under the wooden floor... the wooden chest..."
She drew a deep breath before walking into her grandmother's bedroom.
Beneath the old wooden bed was a floorboard that looked as though it had been repaired many years ago.
Pantawan slowly pried it up.
Beneath it was an old wooden chest covered in dust.
Her heart began to pound.
When she lifted the lid, there were only three things inside:
An old yellowed envelope.
A brown leather-bound journal.
And a small cloth pouch containing only a handful of green coffee beans.
Pantawan picked up the envelope.
Written across the front in handwriting she didn't recognize were the words:
"Dear Pantawan... If you've opened this letter, it means Grandma is no longer here."
Her heart began to race.
The hand holding the envelope started to tremble.
Never knowing that...
This single letter
was about to lead her away from the peaceful mountain
and into a world filled with power, secrets, and betrayal.
