I. The Prophecy Written on the Ancient Palm Leaf
Centuries ago, when the land of Nusantara was still an untamed realm of wild jungles and ancient mountains spewing the wrath of the gods, a Great Sage secluded his spirit atop the highest peak of Mount Kelud. Beneath a sky shifting from silvery blue to pitch-black soot, he carved a prophecy onto a golden palm leaf treated with sacred oils. His fingers, trembling with age and the vibration of spiritual energy, etched ancient characters destined to alter the course of history.
“When the red-tailed star crosses the night sky, cleaving the heavens like a bleeding wound, a child bearing the Sacred Mahaprana Soul shall be born. The mark of a spinning sun-wheel shall be etched upon his crown. He is fated to become the Just King who unites Nusantara beneath a mantle of peace... or the Dark Lord who plunges the world into a thousand years of endless night.”
The prophecy never named a kingdom. It made no reference to royal bloodlines, nor did it favor any caste or realm. The Great Sage knew the power of Mahaprana was no cheap blessing. It was the source of every prana current in the cosmos—a pure energy capable of breathing life into dead soil, yet equally potent enough to tear down the barriers separating the Human Realm, the Spirit Realm, and the Primeval Realm.
For hundreds of years, the golden palm leaf lay hidden in the deepest vault of Mahasakti Academy, guarded by chosen sages sworn to secrecy upon their lives. But like water finding a crack through heavy stone, rumors of the prophecy leaked out. It transformed into bedtime folklore in thatched huts, heated debates among ministers in grand royal courts, and both the worst nightmare and ultimate ambition burning within the chests of dark warlords.
Everyone awaited the single sign: the red-tailed star across the chest of the night sky.
II. The Night of the Light-Child's Birth
That night in the Kingdom of Arcapura, the air hung so heavy it felt as if the sky itself were holding its breath. Arcapura was far from the grandest realm in Nusantara. Compared to the terrifying military might of Majapahit or the battle-hardened warriors of Pajajaran, Arcapura was merely a quiet agricultural domain nestled in a green valley—home to humble folk and ruled by a wise king. But tonight, that serenity vanished.
Dry thunder rumbled relentlessly, rattling the main wooden pillars of the palace pavilion. Inside the royal chamber, the Queen fought against death itself to bring her firstborn into the world. Cold sweat drenched her pale forehead while her cries of agony harmonized with the howl of night winds sweeping down from the mountains.
The King stood outside the heavy wooden doors, his face rigid with tension. His hand gripped the hilt of his ancestral kris tightly. Beside him, several court sages sat bowed in silence, their lips moving frantically as they chanted prayers for safety.
Suddenly, the Queen's cries cut short. A dead silence fell over the entire palace, broken a moment later by the sharp, piercing cry of a newborn babe. At that exact instant, the sky above Arcapura tore open. A streak of fiery red light shot across the night dome from the northeast to the southwest. It was the red-tailed star—the comet of fate—foretold for centuries.
The King burst into the chamber, ignoring all royal protocol. Nurse Sari, the loyal palace nurse, was gently wiping the babe with fine silk. Her face was deathly pale, eyes wide with shock as she stared at the infant's head.
"My Lord..." Nurse Sari whispered, her voice trembling so hard it was barely audible.
The King stepped forward and gently gathered his son from her arms. With shaking hands, he brushed aside the soft hair at the crown of the newborn's head. There, glowing with a faint golden light, was a birthmark shaped like a swirling circle with delicate sunrays fanning outward—a spinning sun-wheel.
The King's heart nearly stopped. The prophecy was real. The tiny infant squirming in his arms was the Mahaprana, fated to lead... or to destroy.
"His name shall be Arya Aruna," the King whispered, his voice thick with deep love and profound terror. "But for his own safety, address him as Burhan outside our immediate family. Not a single soul beyond this room must ever learn of his birthmark."
From her bed, the Queen gazed at her son through tear-filled eyes. She knew that from this moment on, her child's life would never truly belong to them. The world was going to hunt him.
III. Whispers Across the Three Realms
The birth of Arya Aruna sent an unseen yet devastating shockwave through every corner of Nusantara.
In the heart of the magnificent Majapahit Empire, royal astrologers bolted upright from their sleep, gasping for air. They rushed up the observation towers, staring wide-eyed at the night sky to catch the fading remnants of the red tail along the horizon. By morning, an emergency council convened behind the red-brick walls of the palace. Nobles and generals spoke in hushed, tense tones, realizing the supreme throne of Nusantara now lay under the shadow of a power beyond their control. Whoever that child was, he had to be found—either to be forged into a political ally or eliminated before he grew into a threat to their reign.
Meanwhile, deep within the Spirit Realm, the beating wings of primeval beasts shattered the silence of sacred forests. In the depths of Alas Purwo, a golden-eyed white tiger stood atop a rocky cliff, sniffing the night air as it suddenly filled with the scent of raw, sweet prana. At the bottom of Lake Rawa Pening, a giant serpent guarding the ancient waters opened eyes the size of stone cauldrons, hissing softly as it felt strange vibrations pulsing through the ancient riverways.
To the spirit beasts, the heartbeat of the Sacred Mahaprana bearer was the ultimate spiritual prize. Legends whispered that any spirit creature who consumed the Mahaprana's heart would achieve true immortality, gaining the power to walk beneath the blazing midday sun without losing strength and breaking free from the endless cycle of spirit-death.
"He is born..." whispered a tiny firebird spirit perched on a branch of an ancient banyan tree. "The vessel of light has set foot upon the realm of men."
Yet the threat wasn't limited to monster claws or the blades of royal armies. In the darkest corners of Nusantara, practitioners of the black arts—the Leak sorcerers of Bali Dwipa, the dark masters on the slopes of Mount Lawu, and the curse-weavers hidden behind the thick fogs of Banyuwangi—began preparing their dark offerings. The blood of the Mahaprana was the ultimate catalyst, capable of multiplying their dark magic beyond all limits. The silent hunt had begun before the prince could even crawl.
IV. Whispers from the Valley of Shadows
Far away in a hidden valley untouched by the warmth of sunlight stood the secret stronghold of the Kala Ring. Inside a cavernous stone hall, thousands of black candles burned with eerie blue-violet flames, filling the air with the sharp, pungent scent of frankincense and fresh blood.
At the far end of the hall, resting upon a throne carved from pitch-black stone, sat an old man. His demeanor was serene, almost resembling a holy monk who had completed decades of ascetic meditation. His silver hair and neatly groomed beard gave him a refined look, and his simple robes betrayed no sign that he was the most feared man in all of Nusantara. This was Master Kala, the supreme leader of the Kala Ring.
Master Kala's past was forged in tragedy. Decades ago, he had been the most brilliant disciple at Mahasakti Academy, training alongside the Great Sage himself. But after witnessing the endless suffering of common folk trapped in constant wars between kingdoms, he reached a radical conclusion: human society was fundamentally broken. The only way to forge lasting peace was to utterly destroy the old order—the kingdoms, the academies, the caste system—so a pure, new world could be reborn from the ashes.
Beside his throne, a shapeless black shadow roiled like sentient smoke. From the depth of that shadow came a raspy, guttural whisper that rattled the stone hall to its foundation. It was the echo of an ancient consciousness sealed away since the dawn of creation: Mahakala.
“He... is... born...” the voice hissed, echoing directly inside Master Kala's mind. “I feel... his... prana pulsing... pure as... morning dew... My vessel... bring... the vessel... to me...”
Master Kala slowly closed his eyes, savoring the surge of dark energy emanating from Mahakala's shadow. He knew an ordinary human body would instantly disintegrate trying to contain a primeval consciousness as vast as Mahakala. Only a body imbued with the Mahaprana soul possessed a spiritual vessel strong enough to harbor it without being destroyed.
"I hear your will, Lord Mahakala," Master Kala replied softly, his voice almost like a gentle father speaking to his child. "This world has suffered too long from human greed. We will bring the boy to you. And with you, a balanced world will finally be born."
Master Kala opened his eyes. He turned toward a large wooden table in front of him, where an ancient map of Nusantara made of deerskin lay spread out. Slowly, he picked up a long iron needle tipped with a blood-red bead.
Gazing at the section marking the Kingdom of Arcapura, he drove the needle straight into its center.
"Go," Master Kala commanded the shadows lurking in the corners of the room. "Keep watch over Arcapura. Let the boy grow a little longer under the fragile protection of his palace. But ensure he never leaves our sight. When the time comes, we will claim our destiny."
Outside the valley of shadows, dark clouds swirled into a massive vortex, blotting out the moonlight. Far away in Arcapura, the infant Arya Aruna suddenly burst into a frantic cry in his mother's arms, as if he could feel that somewhere far off, the shadow of death had already begun its march toward him.
