The days passed, and Lydia and Loui's plan was beginning to take shape.
It was becoming increasingly clear that the two of them could govern the kingdom far better than the current king.
Lydia possessed a remarkable intelligence. From a young age, she had shown a natural gift for commerce and negotiation. She knew how to manage wealth, persuade people, and spot opportunities where others saw only problems. Her strategic mind would be a formidable weapon in any war.
Loui, for his part, had a different kind of talent.
He was exceptional with people.
Even though he was reserved — and at times seemed cold — he had a way of earning the trust of everyone he met. When he let his true nature show, he was kind, courteous, and attentive.
There was something in his gaze that put people at ease.
They simply felt they could trust him.
It was precisely that combination that made the two of them so dangerous.
Lydia thought like a strategist.
Loui won hearts.
Together, they could unite merchants, nobles, and discontented ministers alike.
That evening, the two of them walked through the mansion's gardens.
The wind stirred the flowers as moonlight lit the stone path ahead of them.
"You know…" Lydia said, breaking the silence. "When we first met, I was convinced you'd be the worst husband in the world."
Loui laughed.
"Funny — I thought the exact same thing about you."
They laughed together.
It was a light, easy laugh, nothing like the arguments from the early days of their marriage.
"I think we were both wrong." Lydia smiled.
Loui looked at her for a moment.
"I think so too."
Their eyes met.
For the first time, the silence between them wasn't uncomfortable.
It was calm.
Lydia felt her heart quicken.
Without quite realizing it, she took a small step toward him.
Loui didn't look away.
For one brief moment, it seemed as though all the chaos of the kingdom had simply ceased to exist.
But the peace didn't last.
In the distance, the city bells began to ring.
A servant came running into the garden.
"My lord Marquess! My lady Marchioness!"
The two of them stepped apart.
"What happened?"
"There are riots in the capital. The people are protesting the high taxes. Some soldiers have already clashed with the demonstrators."
Lydia exchanged a glance with Loui.
She took a slow breath.
"It seems the chaos has begun."
Loui nodded.
"And it may be exactly the opportunity we've been waiting for."
As the kingdom plunged into revolt, something was shifting between the two of them as well.
The friendship born from hatred was beginning, slowly, to become something far deeper.
