"Hurry, Danu! Don't let us lose that car!" Arlan shouted, gripping Danu's shoulder tightly.
The night wind of Astina City cut to the bone, but Arlan didn't feel it. His thoughts were fixed solely on the black car speeding ahead of them. The fog grew thicker, obscuring the glowing red taillights of Satria's car.
"I'm pushing this bike as hard as I can, Lan! Hold on tight!" Danu shouted back. He weaved through the deserted city streets, avoiding several potholes hidden beneath the fog. The old motorcycle's engine roared, shattering the oppressive silence of the night. Arlan lowered his head, trying to shield the metal box in his arms from the biting wind.
"He's heading toward Swara Park! What could he possibly be planning there this late at night?" Arlan asked, half shouting. He narrowed his eyes, trying to see through the fog blanketing the road ahead. He could see the car make a sharp turn toward the gate of the abandoned park.
"Maybe he thinks it's a safe place to finish you off, Lan! You're seriously out of your mind!" Danu slammed on the brakes as they reached the gate. Satria's car stopped abruptly, its tires screeching painfully. Arlan jumped off before Danu's motorcycle had even come to a complete stop.
"Satria! Get out here! Let Maya go!" Arlan shouted as he ran toward the car. His hands clenched into fists, the veins in his neck standing out. He no longer cared about the pain in his stomach from the beating Satria's men had given him earlier. He had only one focus: Maya.
Satria stepped out of the car calmly, as if he were attending a business meeting. He straightened his slightly disheveled suit, then looked at Arlan with disdain.
"You really don't know when to give up, do you?" Satria said in a cold, flat voice.
"Where's Maya? Let her go right now!" Arlan took a step forward, challenging Satria inches from his face. His breath came fast, forming white vapor in Astina City's cold air. He could feel the anger surging inside his chest.
"Maya is my fiancée. She's safe with me. You're the threat here," Satria replied with a mocking smile. He glanced toward the still-closed car door.
"Maya, get out. Show this pathetic failure that you don't need him."
The car door opened slowly. Maya stepped out on trembling legs. Her eyes were swollen, her face deathly pale beneath the dim park lights. She looked at Arlan with an unreadable expression—a mixture of longing, anger, and deep disappointment.
"Maya... are you all right?" Arlan asked, his voice softening instantly. He tried to move closer, but Maya took a step back, away from him. The rejection hurt more than any physical blow Arlan had ever received.
"Don't come any closer, Arlan. Don't you dare take another step," Maya said in a trembling voice. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to hold back the chill that shook her to the bone. Her eyes fixed sharply on Arlan, radiating the wound she had buried for five years.
"Maya, I came to save you. Satria... he's not the man you think he is. I have proof in this box!" Arlan lifted the metal box, hoping it could be the key to regaining Maya's trust. But Maya only stared at it with disgust.
"Save me? From whom? From my own fiancé?" Maya let out a bitter laugh, one that sounded unbearably painful.
"Who do you think you are, Arlan? You disappeared for five years without a word, left me on our engagement day, and now you show up acting like some hero?"
"I had no choice, Maya! Satria set me up! He threatened to destroy your family if I didn't leave!" Arlan shouted, trying to defend himself. He wanted Maya to know the truth, to understand how impossible his position had been back then.
"Liar! You always have an excuse to run away!" Maya shouted back even louder. Tears began streaming down her cheeks.
"You left because you're a coward, Arlan! You chose your ambitions overseas instead of fighting for us!"
"That's not true, Maya! I love you! Everything I did was to protect you!" Arlan tried to reach for Maya's hand, but she slapped it away. The movement was so sudden that Arlan nearly lost his balance.
"Don't ever say you love me! You don't know what love means!" Maya pointed at Arlan's chest with a trembling finger.
"Love means staying, Arlan! Love doesn't leave when things get hard! Satria was here when you left! He stayed with me when I was nearly losing my mind searching for you!"
"He stayed with you because it was all part of his plan, Maya! He arranged everything to make me look like a traitor!" Arlan pointed at Satria, who stood silently with a victorious smile on his face.
"Look at him! He's enjoying every second of this!"
"Enough, Arlan! You're only jealous because I managed to give Maya what you couldn't," Satria cut in with nauseating calm. He stepped closer and put an arm around Maya's shoulders.
"Stability, security, and a future. Things a street photographer like you will never have."
"Get your hands off her, Satria!" Arlan snapped. He clenched his fists so tightly that his fingernails turned white. His anger was at a boiling point. He desperately wanted to punch that arrogant face, but he knew it would only make things worse in front of Maya.
"Or what? You're going to take my picture?" Satria laughed derisively.
"You have nothing, Arlan. All you have is that old metal box, which probably contains nothing but scraps of memories from the past. Maya has forgotten you. She chose me."
"Is that true, Maya? You chose the man who destroyed our lives?" Arlan looked at Maya, searching for a glimmer of hope in her eyes. But all he found was emptiness and profound pain. Maya looked so fragile, as if she might shatter at any moment.
"I choose not to be hurt by you anymore, Arlan," Maya replied softly, but every word felt like a dagger plunging into Arlan's heart.
"Satria may not be perfect, but he's here. He's real. You, on the other hand... you're nothing but a ghost from the past that should have stayed dead."
"Maya, please... look inside this box. Just once. If you still want to be with him after you see what's inside, I'll leave and never show my face to you again," Arlan pleaded. He held out the metal box with trembling hands. This was his last gamble.
Maya stared at the box for a long moment. Doubt flickered in her eyes, along with a fierce inner conflict. Her hand slowly rose, as if she wanted to reach for the box, but Satria immediately grabbed her wrist.
"Don't, Maya. He's just trying to manipulate you again. Don't let him get inside your head," Satria whispered right into Maya's ear. His voice sounded like sweet poison, trying to pull Maya back under his influence.
"I want to know, Satria. I want to know what he really brought," Maya said, her voice suddenly firm. She pulled her hand free from Satria's grip and stepped toward Arlan. Her eyes remained locked on the metal box.
"Don't be stupid, Maya! This is just his cheap trick!" Satria tried to block her, but Danu immediately stepped forward and stood in front of him. Danu stared him down, ready to act if Satria tried anything.
"Let her see it, Satria. Unless you're actually afraid of what's inside," Danu said mockingly. He folded his arms across his chest, making room for Maya and Arlan to talk.
Maya took the box from Arlan's hands. Its weight felt real, carrying the burden of the past she had spent so long trying to forget. With trembling hands, she tried to unlock it. Arlan held his breath, his heart pounding so loudly he could hear it in his own ears.
"The key... Arlan, where's the key?" Maya asked without looking back. She felt along the edges of the box, searching for a way to open it. The urgency in her voice made Arlan even more tense.
"The key is in the necklace I gave you back then, Maya. You still have it, right?" Arlan asked, full of hope. He remembered clearly that he had hidden the tiny key inside the pendant of the engagement necklace from their failed engagement.
Maya fell silent. Her face went pale. Reflexively, she touched her neck, where a silver necklace lay hidden beneath her blouse. She had never taken it off, even after becoming engaged to Satria. It was the only part of Arlan she hadn't been able to throw away.
"You're still wearing it?" Satria asked, his voice turning cold and menacing. He looked at Maya in a way that made her shudder. "After everything I've given you, you're still keeping trash from this man?"
"This is none of your business, Satria!" Maya shot back with newfound courage. She yanked the necklace until it snapped, then retrieved the tiny key hidden inside it. Without another moment's hesitation, she inserted the key into the lock of the metal box.

The lock opening sounded thunderous in the silence of Swara Park. Maya slowly lifted the lid. Inside was a stack of photographs, several old documents, and a small voice recorder. Maya picked up one of the photographs, and her eyes widened.
"This... this is a photo of Satria in my father's office five years ago?" Maya asked, her voice barely a whisper. The photograph showed Satria handing a large brown envelope to someone who appeared to be a government official.
"Read the document underneath it, Maya. It's proof of a money transfer from Satria's account to a third party to sabotage your father's project. He was the one who bankrupted your family's company so he could swoop in as your savior," Arlan explained quickly.
"No... Satria, is this true?" Maya turned toward Satria, horror filling her eyes. She held the document as if it were a burning ember scorching her hands.
Satria didn't answer. His once-calm face had turned dark. Anger flashed in his eyes. He realized that the secret he had kept tightly hidden for five years had finally been exposed in front of the woman he wanted to possess completely.
"Do you really think those documents are real? Arlan could have forged them! He's a photographer—he's an expert at manipulating images!" Satria shouted, making one last attempt to defend himself. But even to his own ears, his voice sounded unconvincing.
"Then what about this recording? Is this fake too?" Maya pressed the play button on the voice recorder. Static crackled for a moment before a painfully familiar conversation came through clearly.
*"Make sure Arlan Dewangga never comes back to this city. Give him that fake contract overseas. If he refuses, you know what to do to the Kirana family."*
It was Satria's voice. Cold, cruel, and calculating. Maya dropped the recorder to the ground. Her body went limp, and she would have fallen if Arlan hadn't caught her. This time, Maya didn't push him away.
"You... you really did it?" Maya whispered toward Satria. Her voice was filled with deep hatred. "You destroyed my life, destroyed my family, and made me hate the man I loved most... just so you could have me?"
"I did it because I love you, Maya! Arlan isn't good enough for you! He'll only drag you into poverty!" Satria shouted, losing control. He tried to lunge forward and take the box, but Danu immediately stopped him with a hard shove.
"Don't you dare touch them, Satria! It's over!" Danu stood tall, protecting Arlan and Maya. He looked at Satria with utter disgust. "You're not a savior. You're a predator."
Satria burst into a wild laugh. He reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a phone.
"You think this is over? You think you can win this easily in Astina City? I have people on every corner of this city!"
"Go ahead and call them, Satria. I'm not afraid anymore. I lost everything five years ago. Now I won't let you take Maya from me again," Arlan said in a voice that was calm but firm. He put an arm around Maya's shoulders, giving her the strength she had been missing all this time.
"We have to leave, Arlan. Before his people get here," Maya whispered. She looked at Arlan, her eyes now full of remorse. "I'm sorry... I'm sorry I didn't believe you."
"We'll talk about that later, Maya. Right now, we need to get to safety," Arlan replied. He turned toward Danu. "Danu, take Maya on your bike. I'll follow in Satria's car. We'll meet at Orange Café."
"No! You aren't going anywhere!" Satria shouted as he tried to charge at Arlan. But at that same moment, several car headlights appeared in the distance, cutting through the fog of Swara Park. The sound of police sirens began to draw closer.
"Looks like someone called the cops," Danu said with a satisfied smile. He pointed toward the police cars beginning to surround the park. Satria froze, his face turning deathly pale.
"You... you called the police?" Satria asked Danu. Danu merely shrugged casually.
"I'm a street musician, Satria. I have friends everywhere, including people who are sick of watching you throw your weight around."
Arlan gave Satria one last look before leading Maya toward Danu's motorcycle.
"This is the end of your game, Satria. Astina City won't be your hiding place anymore."
But just as they were about to leave, Satria suddenly lunged for the metal box still lying on the ground. He managed to grab it and tried to run into the darkness of the park, beyond the reach of the police lights.
"Stop, Satria! Don't run!" Arlan shouted. He let go of Maya and immediately chased after Satria. The two of them disappeared into the thick fog blanketing the interior of Swara Park, leaving Maya and Danu terrified.
"Arlan! Don't!" Maya screamed, her voice breaking in the darkness of the night. She wanted to chase after them, but Danu held her back.
"Don't, Maya. Let Arlan finish this. He needs to do this for himself."
In the dense fog, Arlan could hear Satria's hurried footsteps. He kept chasing, relying on the instincts of a photographer accustomed to hunting for light in the darkness. Suddenly, the loud roar of rushing water rang out. They had reached the edge of the artificial lake in the middle of the park.
"Stop, Satria! There's nowhere left to run!" Arlan shouted. He saw Satria's silhouette standing at the edge of a weathered wooden dock. The metal box was still clutched in his arms.
"If I can't have her, then no one can!" Satria shouted, desperation filling his voice. He raised the metal box high, preparing to throw it into the lake's deep, dark water.
"Don't do it! That's the only evidence we have!" Arlan ran as fast as he could, trying to grab the box before it was too late. But the wooden dock creaked loudly, unable to bear their combined weight.
*CRACK!*
The dock split apart. Arlan and Satria both lost their balance. The metal box slipped from Satria's hands and hung in the air as they both went tumbling toward the cold water. Arlan reached for the box midair, but the darkness of the fog seemed to swallow everything.
A tremendous splash shattered the silence of the night. From a distance, Maya could only stand frozen, staring toward the fog that now swallowed the two men who had colored her life with love and pain. Silence fell over Swara Park once more, leaving behind the mystery of who would emerge again from the surface of that cold water.
