Wren Ashby has been dead for three years, working as a Harvester who collects the souls of the dying. With over eleven thousand successful harvests and a 98.2% compliance rate, she has never once disobeyed the System. Until Kael Thorne. When Wren arrives at a collapsed tunnel to collect the soul of the dying rescue worker, Kael somehow sees her—and reaches out, making her feel warmth for the first time since her death. Though his time is supposed to be over, Kael refuses to die. When the System detects an Anomaly, a powerful Auditor arrives to erase the threat. Wren is ordered to surrender Kael's soul, but for the first time, she chooses to defy the rules of the dead. And if saving one mortal means challenging the System itself, Wren may have to decide how much she's willing to lose for him.
