Every night the same dream returns, and I can never wake fast enough to understand what it wants from me. A voice says "Welcome Home" as if I've been gone a lifetime, though I don't recognize the house, the hallway, or the door that keeps appearing at the end of it. Worse is the figure waiting there: a shape with my height, my hands, my way of standing, but no face at all, just a blank where a question mark seems to hover instead of features. I wake each time with the same two questions lodged in my throat. What does "Welcome Home" really mean when nothing about it feels like coming home? And what does it mean that the thing missing a face is the one who seems to know me best?
