Between Love and Danger
Isabella Mendes had always been cautious. She grew up learning that the world wasn't always fair and that trusting the wrong people could cost far too much.
That's why she built barriers.
She kept her distance. Controlled every step. Never let anyone get close enough to discover her fears.
Until that night.
Everything changed when Isabella witnessed something she never should have seen.
Within minutes, her quiet life became a nightmare. Someone powerful wanted to silence her. And to do it, they were willing to do anything.
That's when Miguel Bastos appeared.
Cold. Mysterious. Dangerous.
A man who seemed to know every secret in that city and carried stories in his eyes that he preferred to keep hidden.
—I can protect you —he said.
Isabella backed away.
—And what do you want in return?
Miguel held her gaze.
—For you to follow my rules.
She should have walked away.
She should have gone to the police.
She should have trusted anyone but him.
But when she heard a car pull up in front of her house and realized someone was watching her from across the street, Isabella understood that Miguel might be her only chance of surviving.
She accepted.
From that night on, she lived under his protection.
But the longer she stayed by his side, the harder it became to separate protection from control, fear from desire, and truth from lies.
Miguel was hiding something.
Isabella knew it.
And every time she tried to find out what it was, she found only more questions.
Until one of them changed everything:
Why had Miguel already known she was in danger before she had even told him what she'd seen?
The answer came too late.
The man who had promised to protect her was connected to the secret that had put her life at risk.
And worse, someone close to Isabella was helping her enemies.
When an anonymous message arrived on her phone in the early hours of the morning, her heart raced:
“Don't trust him. You'll be the next person to die.”
Isabella deleted the message, but she couldn't erase the fear.
A few seconds later, she heard three knocks on the door.
She stopped breathing.
—Isabella? —It was Miguel's voice.
She didn't answer.
—Open the door. Now.
—How do you know I'm here?
Silence.
Then Miguel answered:
—Because they've already arrived.
A crash echoed through the hallway.
Isabella ran to him.
Miguel grabbed her hand and pulled her close.
—Trust me.
She looked into his eyes and realized something that frightened her even more than the danger:
she wanted to trust him.
She wanted to believe that man.
She wanted to kiss him.
Even knowing she might be giving her heart to the wrong person.
—Miguel... who's after me?
He took a deep breath.
—People who won't stop until they get what they want.
—And what do they want?
Miguel moved closer.
—You.
Before Isabella could ask why, the lights went out.
A gunshot tore through the window.
Miguel shielded her with his own body.
And in that instant, Isabella realized her life would never be the same.
Because there was a secret capable of destroying them both.
A secret Miguel knew.
A secret she herself had forgotten.
And when the truth finally came to light, Isabella would have only two choices:
run from that man...
or stay by his side and discover how far love could go to face danger.
Because in that story, the greatest risk wasn't dying.
It was falling in love.
