Child of the Sunrise

In early twentieth-century Surabaya, a boy named Soekarno watches his people struggle under colonial rule and begins asking why his nation cannot decide its own destiny. Drawn into the circle of the movement leader H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto, he turns that question into conviction, while far away the studious Mohammad Hatta pursues the same dream through books in Minangkabau and later the Netherlands. Two young men with very different temperaments move slowly toward one shared goal, an independent Indonesia.
