Chronicle of a Former Hired Soldier

After fifteen years on the battlefield, the mercenary Leon has five days left on his contract and enough money to retire and buy a mill. Then a stranger offers him two gold coins to escort a thirteen-year-old boy named Matthias south, warning that the child may be hunted for what he carries. When the boy's bag turns out to hold a war ledger and a patient commander named Garen starts closing every road ahead of them, Leon finds that leaving the war behind is harder than surviving it.
