Failed exam candidate Yu Sansheng wakes to six glowing lanterns in his attic and a new title: Lantern-Keeper, heir to six ancestral debts owed to the dead. If any lantern goes out, the debt is collected from his body, organ by organ. With no money, no martial skill, and thirty days left, his only weapons are the Restitution Code and a talent for staying polite while terrified.
