Yan Hu, a sixteen-year-old courier bound by debt, crosses the haunted Hollowfoot Pass for a shadowy caravan guild, carrying other people's sins over the mountains in return for power he can barely control. When a veiled widow presses a murder token to his chest, the guild's rules give him no room to refuse. He has nine hours to carry out a minor killing, or the karmic weight will break his spine before sunrise, and every possible victim within the caravan happens to be someone he has quietly been protecting. As dawn approaches, it becomes clear the masters have been watching him the entire time.
