Yelena Otzar, the crown's feared First Question, has eleven days to force a confession from a chained crown prince accused of regicide, or her indebted family will be sold off to the silver mines. Prince Cassian agrees to speak the truth under one condition: each night he may ask her a single question that she must answer honestly, if she answers at all. As Yelena's interrogation of Cassian slowly becomes Cassian's interrogation of Yelena, the crown's most obedient servant begins to suspect the case was built not to uncover a killer, but to hide one.
