Chapter 7: Wild Soul
The underground atelier of Blackwood Academy held an atmosphere far denser than the rest of the building. The vast, high-ceilinged room was saturated with the scents of old oil paint, turpentine, and medieval dust settled over cracked plaster-and-marble statues. Daylight never reached this floor; the only source of illumination came from an ornate Gothic iron chandelier, casting a dim reddish-yellow glow that created long shadows dancing across the stone walls.
Iris sat alone on a tall wooden stool, facing a large blank canvas mounted on a wooden easel. Her fingers gripped the paintbrush so tightly that her knuckles had gone white. Inside her chest, her heart no longer pounded from fear, but from a burning wave of anticipation. She could feel it with perfect clarity—even without turning around—the sharp, searing gaze boring into the back of her neck from the teacher's desk in the corner of the room.
Tap... tap... tap... tap...
The sound of low-heeled leather boots striking the floor shattered the atelier's silence. The footsteps were slow, heavy, and filled with absolute authority. Mr. Zephyr was approaching. Every thud resonated directly with Iris's pulse, synchronizing their heartbeats into one intoxicating rhythm.
Iris drew a deep breath, trying to calm the strange turmoil in her lower abdomen, then began dipping the tip of her brush into the paint palette. Yet every stroke she made across the canvas felt painfully slow and stiff, laden with intense emotional tension.
"You're painting shadows, Miss Francesca, but your hand is clearly searching for something else." The cold, deadly baritone suddenly drifted through the air behind her, so close that Iris's flesh prickled at once.
Iris swallowed, her hand freezing in midair. "I'm trying to pour onto the canvas what I see in this place, sir."
The footsteps stopped directly behind her. The distinctive scent of old sandalwood and dense cold tobacco immediately surged into the room, driving out the smell of turpentine and paralyzing the last remnants of Iris's sanity.
Mr. Zephyr slowly bent toward her. The maestro's cold breath brushed directly over the exposed skin at the nape of Iris's neck, sending an erotic shiver sharply down her spine and making her breath catch in her throat.
"Your strokes are trembling, Iris," the man whispered, his voice so low, hoarse, and mesmerizing that it caressed the sensitive nerves in her neck without touching her. "Is that trembling because you're afraid... or because you secretly desire my touch on that canvas more than anything?"
"I... I'm not afraid of anyone," Iris replied in a faintly trembling voice, refusing to show her weakness, even as her vision blurred from the suffocating physical proximity.
"Good," Mr. Zephyr murmured, a quiet laugh heavy with triumph slipping from his lips. "Because that false courage of yours is about to be destroyed."
Before Iris could process his words, a strange phenomenon unfolded before her. The pristine white canvas mounted in front of her suddenly began to shake violently. Without a single brush or hand touching it, thick red oil paint seeped from the pores of the canvas, moving on its own to form strokes of intensely sensual artistic lines.
Iris's eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat. The red paint quickly wove itself together, painting a detailed silhouette of Iris's own bare-chested body, rendered with breathtaking beauty—vulgar, yet filled with a dark reverence for art—within the wooden frame. The painting seemed to breathe, vividly capturing every curve of her body and every beat of Iris's fear-stricken heart.
"Well?" Mr. Zephyr whispered directly beside Iris's ear as the man's cold hand slowly reached around from the side, curling over Iris's waist through her thin shirt and holding her in place so she could not flee from that reality. "Is this painting honest enough to define your wild soul, Iris?"
Iris let out a stifled sigh, her eyes closing for a moment as she savored the cold sting of the man's hand burning against her skin. She could no longer fight; all her defenses collapsed before the allure of the ghost teacher.
Mr. Zephyr pressed his body closer, lightly kissing the strands of hair at Iris's temple before whispering an absolute command that made her blood boil instantly: "From now on, you're no longer a student at this academy... you are my eternal canvas."
