Chapter 8: Defiance
The atelier door groaned heavily as the senior students hurried out of the room, fleeing in terror to escape the nocturnal shadows that had begun creeping upward. Within minutes, the underground art studio fell silent once more. The Gothic chandelier suddenly dimmed, leaving behind a reddish-yellow glow that cast a sharp beam over the red canvas bearing the silhouette of Iris's body.
Iris did not move. She remained rooted in front of the canvas, her breathing ragged and uneven as her blood boiled with a suffocating combination of anger and desire. She had deliberately allowed herself to be left behind, refusing to surrender to the fear that had been trying to paralyze her common sense.
From the darkest corner of the atelier, behind rows of cracked marble statues, the slow, heavy scrape of footsteps sounded across the wooden floor. Mr. Zephyr emerged from the shadows, wearing a long black robe over his white shirt. His perfectly sculpted face looked cold, yet a possessive flame burned brightly in the depths of his dark eyes.
"You're still here, Miss Francesca," the baritone voice broke through the silence, low and seductive. "Was the painting in front of you not enough to make you run screaming back to your room?"
Iris spun around, fixing the maestro with a fearless, piercing stare. "I don't need a cursed painting to know that you're playing with my sanity, Mr. Zephyr! What do you really want? Why do you keep pressuring me?"
Mr. Zephyr did not answer with words. He stepped forward at an intentionally slow pace, mercilessly eroding the distance between them. Each step forced Iris to retreat until her back finally struck the heavy frame of the canvas easel.
The distance between them vanished completely. Mr. Zephyr's broad, solid, cold chest pressed almost perfectly against Iris's body, creating an extraordinary heat that scorched her skin—a dizzying contrast between the warmth of Iris's flesh and the aura of death surrounding the maestro. The scent of sandalwood and cold tobacco swept across Iris's face so powerfully that she felt herself losing oxygen.
"Do you think you can challenge me with that defiant look, Iris?" Mr. Zephyr whispered directly before her lips, his voice so heavy it sent shudders through every nerve in the girl's body. "Let's see how brave you are when I tear down your defenses until nothing remains."
"I'm not afraid of you..." Iris squeaked, her voice trembling violently as the man's cold hand slowly lifted into the air.
With a swift, authoritative motion, Mr. Zephyr knocked the paintbrush from Iris's hand. The wooden object clattered loudly against the marble floor, shattering the last remnants of calm in the room. In the next instant, the maestro's cold hand closed around Iris's lower jaw, holding it gently but firmly and forcing her to tilt her head fully toward him.
Iris gasped, her breath catching in her throat. Her heart thundered wildly, pounding against her ribs in time with the pulse in her neck.
Yet instead of struggling or fighting his grip, Iris closed her eyes for a moment. She refused to back down. Slowly, she tilted her head higher, allowing the man's cold thumb to trace the line of her lips with a dangerously intimate touch—stroking the surface of her slightly parted lower lip, parted in shock.
"You're surrendering so quickly, Iris?" Mr. Zephyr whispered, his gaze fixed on Iris's trembling lips.
"I'm not surrendering..." Iris breathed, her eyes opening again as they reflected the man's dark silhouette with naked surrender. "...I just want to see how far you're willing to take me."
Before the words had fully left Iris's lips, something strange suddenly happened. Without wind or warning, every Gothic chandelier in the atelier went completely dark in the blink of an eye.
Pitch-black darkness swallowed the room at once, erasing every visual boundary between them. Amid the suffocating darkness and oppressive silence, a warm breath laced with the scent of sandalwood suddenly drew near.
And in that absolute darkness, Mr. Zephyr's cold lips gently touched the edge of Iris's jaw, slowly traveling down toward her neck in a demanding kiss that burned away the last remnants of the girl's sanity.
