Chapter 5 - Public Risk
Claire read Margaret Chen’s message a third time before she deleted it. The words stayed. Optics. Professional. Several of us have noticed. She arrived at the office the next morning with the residual heat of the boardroom still under her skin and the knowledge that the arrangement was no longer as private as she had designed it. Ethan was already at his desk. He looked up when she walked past. She did not stop.
At eleven she called him into her office and closed the door herself.
“The Kensington address. Give it to me.”
He handed her a single sheet. She read the street name and the times, then folded the paper and slipped it into her bag. “You will stay late tonight. After seven. I have a call with the New York team that may run long. You will wait in the small meeting room on this floor until I text you.”
Ethan nodded. “Understood.”
Claire looked at him for a moment longer than necessary. “And Ethan. If anyone asks why you are still here, you are finishing the revised board paper. Nothing else.”
He held her gaze. “Nothing else.”
She dismissed him. At six fifty-five she texted a single word: Now. The small meeting room was at the end of the corridor, past the empty open-plan area. Most of the floor had already left. Ethan locked the door behind him. Claire was already there, blouse unbuttoned, skirt pushed up, standing against the far wall with her phone in one hand.
“On your knees. And keep your ears open. If you hear anyone in the corridor you stop. Immediately.”
He sank down. She stepped closer and guided his mouth between her legs. The risk was immediate and sharp. The meeting room door was solid but not soundproof. Anyone walking past could hear if they listened. Claire kept one hand in his hair and the other on her phone, eyes half closed, hips rocking against his tongue in short, controlled movements. The taste of her filled his mouth. Salt and heat and the faint residual of her perfume from earlier in the day. Ethan focused on the wet heat of her and the sound of his own breathing. Every time footsteps passed in the corridor outside he stilled. Claire’s fingers tightened until the footsteps faded, then she pulled him back in. Her thighs trembled once when a voice called out a name further down the hall. She did not stop. She used the fear the same way she used everything else: as leverage.
Claire kept her eyes open and watched the top of his head. The fear of discovery was real. So was the heat. She used both. Every time a sound came from the corridor she tightened her grip in his hair and held him still until it passed, then pulled him back harder. The combination of risk and obedience made her wetter. She could feel it. She could feel him responding to the same edge. When the voices finally moved on she ground down against his mouth and came with a sharp, controlled inhale, thighs locking around his head, one hand still clutching her phone as if the ordinary world outside the room still mattered.
When the last pulse passed she pulled him to his feet, turned him toward the table, and pushed into him from behind. The angle was deep. She fucked him with short, hard strokes while one hand stayed over his mouth. The other braced on the table. Outside, a lift dinged. Voices. Claire did not stop. She drove deeper, the risk sharpening every thrust. Ethan’s control frayed. A low sound escaped him against her palm. She pressed harder.
“Quiet.”
The voices moved past. Claire’s rhythm intensified. When she came a second time it was with a sharp, muffled sound against his shoulder. She kept moving through the aftershocks until Ethan was shaking with the effort of staying silent. Only then did she pull out, turn him, and take him in her hand.
“Now. Quietly.”
He came with his forehead pressed to her shoulder, a broken breath against her neck, spilling over her fist while the residual fear of discovery still hummed under his skin. Claire watched his face the entire time. When it was over she cleaned them both with tissues from her bag and smoothed her clothing back into place.
“You did not stop when you heard the voices,” she said. “That was the point. You stayed. You took what I gave you. Good.”
Ethan straightened his shirt. His pulse was still high. “And if someone had opened the door?”
“Then we would have dealt with it. The test was whether you would freeze or continue. You continued.” She picked up her bag. “Come to the flat tonight. Nine. Do not be late.”
She left first. Ethan waited three minutes, then unlocked the door and walked back to his desk with his expression arranged into something ordinary. The mark of her teeth was not visible, but he could still feel the pressure of her hand over his mouth.

The flat was quiet when he arrived. Claire opened the door herself, already barefoot, the professional armour gone. She did not speak. She simply stepped aside and let him in, then walked toward the bedroom. Ethan followed. The city lights blurred beyond the windows. Rain had started again, soft against the glass.
Claire turned to face him. “Strip. Then lie down. Tonight you are going to do exactly what I tell you. And for a few minutes I am going to let you set the pace. Do not mistake it for anything else.”
He undressed and lay back on the bed. Claire climbed over him, guided him inside her, and stayed still for a moment, full of him, eyes on his face. Then she said, “Move.”
Ethan thrust up. The freedom was brief and deliberate. He set a hard rhythm, hands on her hips, watching the way her mouth opened and her control frayed at the edges. The city light cut across her collarbones. Claire let him for several strokes. Her nails dug into his chest. A low sound escaped her that she did not immediately cut short. Her eyes had gone dark. For those few moments she was not the CEO. She was simply a woman being fucked the way she had not allowed herself to be fucked since the arrangement began. Then she caught his wrists, pinned them above his head, and took the rhythm back.
“Enough.”
She rode him hard, hips rolling with the same precise cruelty she had used the night he came uninvited. Ethan’s arms stayed pinned. The brief taste of control made the denial sharper. Claire leaned down, forehead almost touching his, and said his name once, low and rough, before she caught herself. The sound landed between them like a crack in glass.
She came with his name still hanging in the air, body locking tight around him, a raw cry she only half managed to swallow. The clench dragged him right to the edge. Claire held still, breathing hard against his neck, and only then released his wrists.
“Now. You can come.”
He thrust up once, twice, and spilled inside her with a broken groan, hands finally free to grip her hips. Claire took it, still shaking, one hand fisted in the sheets beside his head. For a long moment neither of them moved. The rain continued against the glass. Ethan’s pulse hammered under her palm.
When she lifted her head the professional mask was already sliding back into place, but the crack was visible. She had let him set the pace. She had said his name again. She had not planned either of those things.
Claire climbed off him and walked into the en suite. Water ran. Ethan stayed on the bed, body still humming, the brief freedom of those few thrusts still under his skin. He could still feel the moment she had let him set the pace and the moment she had taken it back. The sound of his name in her mouth had not been an order. It had been something else. He was not sure she had meant to let him hear it. When she returned she was wearing the robe. She looked at him for a moment, then said, “Shower if you want. Then leave. I have an early call.”
He sat up. “The meeting room. You wanted to see if I would freeze.”
“And you did not. That is useful.” She paused. “It is also dangerous. Margaret Chen noticed. Others will notice if we are not careful.”
Ethan held her gaze. “Do you want to stop?”
Claire’s mouth tightened. “No. But the terms are changing. Tomorrow you will stay at your desk unless I call you. No late nights on the floor. No closed doors during working hours unless I say otherwise. Are we clear?”
“Clear.”
He dressed. At the bedroom door he paused. Claire stood by the window again, arms folded, watching the rain. For a moment she looked almost ordinary. Then she turned and the CEO was back.
“Nine tomorrow. My office. Door open this time.”
Ethan nodded and left. In the lift he leaned his head against the mirrored wall and exhaled. The brief taste of control still sat under his skin. So did the sound of his name in her mouth. He was no longer certain which of them was testing the other.

Claire’s phone buzzed at six forty-seven the next morning. She was already awake. She had not slept well. The message was from the board secretary.
“Claire. The chair has asked for a short private meeting this afternoon regarding staffing and optics around the board preparations. Three o’clock. His office. Please confirm.”
She read it twice. Then she set the phone down and stared at the ceiling of her bedroom. The residual heat from the night before was still under her skin. So was the knowledge that Ethan had not frozen when the voices passed the meeting room door. And so was the fact that she had let him set the pace, even for a few minutes, and had said his name without meaning to. The brief loss of control sat beside the board’s message like two opposing weights. She had designed the arrangement to keep her safe. She was no longer certain it was doing that.
She typed a short reply. Confirmed. Then she lay back against the pillows and closed her eyes. The arrangement was no longer only between the two of them. The board had noticed. And for the first time since she had made the offer in this flat, Claire was not certain she still held every piece of the leverage she had thought she owned.
