Chapter 4! Revenue Breaks One Million?
Joko immediately started preparing Ms. Sisca's order.
He had already marinated the chicken for two hours.
The citrus-leaf rice was ready too, made with kaffir lime leaves with the stems removed, lemongrass, salam leaves, minced garlic, thinly sliced shallots, margarine, salt, and just the right amount of powdered stock.
The rice's fragrance filled the air when Joko saw the results of his cooking in the real world for the first time.
“Wow! This is delicious!” Joko praised it. He never imagined he could cook something this good.
He had also finished preparing the garlic sambal.
All he needed were chilies, garlic, salt, sugar, and powdered stock. To make the flavor even richer, Joko used chicken oil rendered from the chicken skin, giving it an extra savory taste. He also made sure the heat wasn't too high so the aroma of the garlic and chilies could come out without burning and turning bitter.
Only the chicken remained to be fried.
He put the chicken, which had been marinating for two hours, into the pan. Ideally, the chicken should be marinated overnight so the seasoning can soak in more deeply.
But Joko didn't have many options, so he had to use this quick method.
He marinated it with lime juice, mashed garlic, powdered stock, salt, garlic powder, and pepper.
Then he added tapioca flour and whole garlic cloves.
Joko fried the chicken over medium heat.
“Zzzling.”
The sound of the chicken frying began to fill the air. So did the mouthwatering aroma of chicken and garlic, which spread throughout Joko's little stall.
Once the oil was hot, he added the chicken and left it alone for a while.
If he flipped the chicken before the coating had set, the tapioca flour would stick to the pan.
He also couldn't put all the chicken in at once. He needed to leave space so the pieces wouldn't stick to one another.
Once the coating had formed, he lowered the heat. Five to seven minutes was enough to cook each side of the chicken.
When it was done, he took it out and let it drain.
He used a double-fry technique to make the chicken extra crispy.
He fried it again in very hot oil for one minute. And it was done.
Joko's garlic fried chicken was ready to hit the streets.
“Um, man, are you selling chicken? How much is one serving?”
A high school girl in a white-and-gray uniform asked him. She wasn't alone. A group of girls had already gathered in front of Joko's stall because the mouthwatering smell of the garlic fried chicken was impossible to resist.
“One combo serving with iced tea is Rp 22,000, but without iced tea, it's only Rp 20,000,” Joko replied with a friendly smile.
“In that case, we'll order five combos with iced tea, man. We'll eat here!” The girls had only just realized that Joko was actually quite handsome.
They giggled and headed for the dining table.
Meanwhile, Joko couldn't hide his delighted smile.
He had thought earning a million in revenue in a single day would be difficult. But with just one order, he'd already made more than Rp 100,000!
He quickly prepared their order.
“Excuse me, ShopeeFood. An order from Ms. Sisca, sir.”
“Oh, yes, sir. Ms. Sisca's order, right? Five minutes. You can take a seat for now.” Joko answered just as cheerfully.
“Sis, did you really order food from Joko?” Lyla asked, staring at Sisca in confusion.
“Yeah, why? Come on, help him out. Joko usually helps us too, right? And he never wants to get paid. He just got laid off out of nowhere. I feel bad for him,” Sisca replied.
“Yeah, but you know it yourself. Joko can't cook. And you only make minimum wage. It's not like you're the boss of a mining company. What are you going to do if you can't eat it?” Lyla asked.
“Oh my God, think positive, Lyla. Why would Joko start a business just to trick people?”
DING!
“We were just talking about him. Look, my order's here.” Sisca quickly went down to the first floor to pick up her order.
“Thanks, sir.” After taking the order, she hurried back to her seat.
“See? I told you Joko's business was legit.”
“Joko's not bad.” Lyla agreed when she saw it, even though it was takeout. The packaging was made from good-quality materials and looked hygienic.
Sisca opened her food.
Inside were garlic fried chicken, sambal, and citrus-leaf rice—enough to make Lyla swallow hard.
“Hey, let me have a taste!” Lyla pulled out her spoon.
“Seriously? You were just badmouthing Joko! And now you want some?” Sisca grumbled. But she let her friend try the food she'd ordered.
When the two of them began eating—
“It's delicious! I never would've guessed Joko could cook this well!” Lyla's eyes widened in disbelief. Joko's cooking was that good.
“Oh my God, Joko. If he can cook like this, why was he working as an office assistant? He should've become a fried-chicken tycoon,” Sisca blurted out.
“Come on, share, Sis!” Lyla protested when she saw how much Sisca was eating.
“Oh my God, why don't you order your own? Here's the link.” Sisca blocked Lyla from grabbing any more and sent her Joko's store link.
As they fought over the food, they became the center of attention in the office.
“Hey, don't let Lyla have all the fun, Sis. I want some too.” Doni refused to be left out.
“Me! Me too!”
In the end, the entire division ordered Joko's garlic fried chicken.
