Chapter 5: A Gift from the System.
“How many orders from Shopee are there altogether?”
Joko saw about twenty orders placed at the same address. It turned out to be his old office.
“Probably Siska’s promo.”
“Man, I’d like to order one more! To go.”
Apparently, the girls had finished eating. One of them wanted another order to go.
“Oh, sure. Just a second.” Joko immediately got to work on the incoming orders.
“Shopee Food delivery.”
This time, a young man in his early twenties wearing an orange vest with the Shopee Food logo came to pick up the orders.
“Yeah, man. Just a second.”
Joko quickly finished everything.
Once he was done, Joko checked his temporary earnings from selling food. Five to six hundred thousand rupiah. Wait, why was it so much? Oh, right. Online orders had the app’s markup.
“How does this system work? This counts as sales revenue, right?” Joko showed the balance that had been deposited into his account.
“Yes, Host.”
“So I’m just a little short?”
In reality…
Two hours later.
Not a single person had come to his shop in two hours. Joko could only zone out while watching short videos on his phone.
Seeing that Joko had no motivation to attract customers, the System immediately did something.
(Host! Come on, cheer up! If Host can make one million rupiah in sales on the first day, Host will receive a door prize!)
“A door prize? What kind of door prize?”
(Ten million rupiah in cash and free boarding-house rent for a year! The System will cover Host’s rent for an entire year! Surprise! Surprise!)
“Why didn’t you tell me, System?”
Joko immediately changed his strategy. No more lazing around and staring at his phone.
He started actively promoting his food across all his social media accounts. He even messaged every contact in his phone who lived in Jakarta. His boarding-house neighbors, whom he barely did more than greet, weren’t spared either, since they were all in the same WhatsApp group.
“Dul, do you want some garlic fried chicken? I’m selling it in Blok M. If you’re interested, you can order it through the food-delivery apps. Here are the links for each app.”
“Zal? How are you? Doing well? I’m selling food in Blok M. If you’re interested, here are the links for the delivery apps. It’s on Shopee Food, GrabFood, and GoFood.”
Joko also came up with the idea of promoting his food through short videos and live streams on TikTok.
Joko’s hard work paid off. Before long, he had blasted his promotions to his best friends, relatives, close contacts, and even people he only knew casually.
One by one, orders from various food-delivery apps came in, and their drivers began arriving.
The System saw Joko’s enthusiasm and watched as his once-empty shop grew busy.
Joko gave himself a thumbs-up. This was how it should have been from the start.
At six in the evening, Joko closed his shop.
He had no choice but to close because he was running low on ingredients and energy.
He added up his sales for the day again. Six hundred thousand, seven hundred thousand, eight hundred thousand.
“4,750,000!” Joko couldn’t believe he had made that much money in a single day.
Of course, he still had to deduct operating costs, app commissions, and the cost of ingredients.
But a single day’s sales could still give him more money than he had earned in an entire month as an office assistant.
(DING! Host! Congratulations on receiving the door prize! Because Host’s sales exceeded the target, the System is giving Host a five-million-rupiah bonus! Congratulations, Host! You have received fifteen million rupiah in cash, along with an exclusive boarding room in Setiabudi that Host can live in free of charge for one year! 👏🎊)
“Ahhhhh!!!” Joko could see a notification showing that 15,000,000 rupiah had been deposited into his bank account.
At last, he could leave the cramped, dark boarding room tucked away in an alley and move into an exclusive place that would normally cost at least 2,000,000 rupiah a month!
Joko had not even had time to cheer in delight when—
he failed to notice that several tattooed men with nose piercings had come to his kiosk.
What did they want here?
