Heavy rain poured down on the earth. Lightning flashed across the sky, accompanied by booming thunder. A luxury car traveled at a moderate speed along the empty road. Besides the heavy rain, it was already well past midnight.
The black car carried only a man in a sharp suit and a driver. The driver stayed focused on the road, taking Damian home so he could rest comfortably.
Meanwhile, in the back seat, Damian tried to get a little sleep. His stern face looked utterly exhausted. He had a great deal of work to handle himself that day.
The man's almond-shaped eyes had just begun to close when he changed his mind because the car suddenly stopped.
"S-sorry, sir," the aging driver said regretfully.
"Why?" Damian asked, his eyes heavy with sleep.
"I-it seems someone has fainted, sir," the driver replied while looking in the rearview mirror.
A woman in a red mini dress lay unconscious by the side of the road. Her body was soaked through by the rain. No one knew how long she had been there.
"Do you know her?" Damian asked in a firm tone after turning briefly to look at the woman through the car window.
"No, sir. I just feel sorry for her."
"Then keep driving."
"But I feel sorry for her, sir. The rain is coming down so hard."
The thick-browed man let out a rough breath. It wasn't because he didn't want to help or lacked compassion. The problem was that this wasn't the first time they'd found someone unconscious by the side of the road.
"Have you forgotten? The last time we helped someone, we were the ones who got held at gunpoint."
Damian recalled that unpleasant incident. Fortunately, he was skilled enough in martial arts that they had managed to make it out safely.
"I remember, sir."
"Then keep driving. I'm traumatized from helping random people," he said firmly, trying to ignore his pity.
"Yes, sir."
The middle-aged driver finally obeyed. He didn't want to make Damian angry.
The car slowly picked up speed again. The rain grew even heavier. The handsome, fair-skinned man with a solid build intended to sleep for a while. However, a few minutes later, he opened his eyes again.
"Turn around, sir."
"I'm sorry, sir?"
"You want to help that woman, don't you?"
Soaking wet, Damian still couldn't understand how he had changed his mind so quickly.
At first, he hadn't wanted to help. He hadn't even cared about the woman. Yet now he was at the hospital because the woman's condition turned out to be more than simple fainting. Her face was covered in bruises. She also had several scrapes on her arms and knees.
Ah... who knew? The fact was, Damian still couldn't ignore his compassion.
"Do you still want to wait, or should we just go home?" the driver asked, breaking Damian out of his reverie.
Before Damian could answer, their attention was drawn to a doctor and a nurse emerging from the woman's treatment room.
"Are you a member of her family?" the doctor asked Damian.
Damian immediately shook his head.
"No, Doctor. We happened to find her unconscious by the side of the road. My driver was worried that something might have happened, so we decided to bring her here."
The doctor nodded slowly.
"She fainted because of a severe blow to the head. However, to determine her condition, we need to perform a CT scan."
"No need."
A woman's voice made everyone turn toward its source.
The woman who had previously been wearing a red mini dress emerged from the treatment room with unsteady steps. Whether it was just Damian's imagination or not, he could see the woman's gaze was ice-cold.
"I'm fine. You don't need to go to the trouble of performing any tests. Excuse me," the woman said firmly before walking away.
Damian let out a rough breath.
It wasn't as if he expected a reward. He had only hoped the woman would show a little gratitude.
"Wait," Damian said, taking long strides to catch up with her.
"What is it?" she asked in a flat tone, looking away.
"Were you never taught to say thank you?"
Damian's question brought the woman's steps to a halt.
The woman who hadn't wanted to look at Damian now locked her gaze onto the man's pitch-black eyes.
"Honored Young Master, thank you for your help. Don't worry. I will repay your kindness another time," she said, her gaze cold.
That look left Damian speechless.
"Are you satisfied? Then, excuse me."
Damian didn't answer. He simply stood there, watching the woman leave the hospital.
He shook his head. Damian still couldn't understand how the woman he had just helped could act so coldly.
"Sir, the administrative matters have been taken care of," the driver reported, now standing beside him.
"You saw it yourself, didn't you? This is one of the reasons I don't want to help random people," Damian said as he walked away, annoyed.
He just wanted to go home, sleep, and forget everything that had happened that night.
Hopefully, fate wouldn't bring Damian together again with the woman in the red dress he had encountered that night.
The woman was beautiful. In fact, she was stunning.
But she was also rude. Extremely rude.
Damian didn't like that.
