Those pitch-black eyes found Elena again. This time, the man's gaze disturbed her thoughts. They didn't know each other, but his stare made Elena feel slightly intimidated.
Whether he meant to do it or not, there was no denying that his gaze made Elena feel strange. All sorts of questions arose in her mind.
Elena stood in front of the mirror, trying to find answers to all the questions filling her head.
Why did that man have to look at her like that?
Was he still upset about the way I'd acted at the hospital earlier?
Did my thank-you come across as insincere?
No.
Elena had genuinely thanked him. But perhaps her cold attitude made her look arrogant and ungrateful.
Or maybe that man was looking down on her because she worked at a nightclub?
Yes, that was possible.
Considering how annoyed the man had looked at the hospital earlier, perhaps he really was arrogant because of his social status.
But what about the woman who had been with him?
Elena clearly knew that woman. Could that man be the person the woman often told Elena about?
But...
The thought made Elena even more restless. She sighed and rubbed her face. She didn't need to think about that stranger. There were far more important things than the gaze of someone she didn't know. Yet the harder Elena tried to ignore him, the more clearly those black eyes appeared in her mind.
Elena looked at her reflection again. Her face looked utterly exhausted, but she had no time to rest. Ever since Mona's death, her life had seemed filled with riddles that never reached an end. She had replayed the events of that night countless times, searching for a clue she might have missed.
Elena knew she was taking a huge risk. Finding out who Mona's guest was wouldn't be easy, especially since Mami wouldn't sit by quietly if she learned what Elena was planning.
"What are you thinking about?"
The deep voice of a man jolted Elena out of her thoughts.
Elena immediately turned around.
Her eyes caught sight of a burly man whose arms were almost completely covered in tattoos. He wore nothing but a short-sleeved T-shirt and a pair of worn-out jeans. A baseball cap covered his head.
His name was Pedro.
Elena didn't know his real name. Everyone at the club simply called him Pedro.
He was probably around thirty-five. He was one of the many people at the club Elena disliked.
If not for Mona, Elena certainly wouldn't have wanted anything to do with him.
Pedro was also one of the people who deserved to be suspected in the case involving Mona.
The reason was clear enough. Pedro was the only person at the club who served as Mami's right-hand man. He was also the one who had brought Mona to her guest that night.
Pedro should have known who the last person with Mona had been.
However, according to his statement, Mona had left by herself that night. Mona's guest had also used an alias. That made it even harder for Elena to discover his identity.
The police might have been able to find him.
But Mona's case had never been reported to the police.
Elena had actually wanted to report it herself, but Mami's threats had left her unable to do anything.
How infuriating.
"Get ready. We're leaving soon."
Elena immediately understood what Pedro meant.
If Pedro had come, it meant Elena had a guest tonight.
In other words, Elena had another chance to find the person who had caused her best friend to die a year ago.
