The sun was blazing hot this afternoon, as if reflecting the heat in Damian’s heart and ears. Laura Cole, a woman he thought had absolutely no shame, had come to his office again and kept rambling about the money Damian still hadn’t transferred since last night.
“Remember, Damian. I can sue you for denying me my rightful share!”
“Rightful share?” Damian stared at her impassively. “In Father’s will, it doesn’t even specify in detail what rights you’re supposed to receive. The only thing clearly written was his request that I accept you as part of the family.”
Laura fell silent. Her fingers briefly clenched around the edge of the bag she was carrying. She clearly hadn’t expected Damian to answer so firmly.
She couldn’t refute Damian’s words because that was exactly what had been written in the will. There was no thirty percent, as the woman kept demanding.
“I’ve already done that,” Damian continued coldly. “Even though my heart clearly rejected it. Now it’s your turn to know your place.”
He had only carried out his father’s final request, nothing more.
“But before he died, Father said I was entitled to thirty percent of his entire fortune,” Laura argued. “I was the only person who stayed by his side before he passed away.”
Damian let out a long breath.
Huff.
Again, this woman was bringing up the same thing.
A baseless claim that had never been accompanied by any evidence whatsoever.
In Damian’s opinion, that wasn’t enough at all. As the person who had handled the family’s affairs all this time, he knew perfectly well that unsupported words meant nothing when it came to inheritance.
Damian didn’t care if Laura considered him heartless. But as a businessman, he couldn’t hand something over based solely on someone’s word without clear evidence.
“Bring me the evidence or a witness,” Damian said firmly. “If it’s true that Father gave you a thirty-percent share, I’ll give it to you on the spot.”
Laura narrowed her eyes at Damian. It was obvious she didn’t like that answer.
“So you really don’t believe me?” Laura asked in a restrained tone.
“I believe in evidence,” Damian replied curtly.
That answer made Laura fall silent again. Her gaze turned sharp, but Damian ignored her completely.
Damian gave her no chance to prolong the argument. He still had plenty of work to finish at the office, and he had no intention of letting family matters interfere with business.
“If there’s no evidence, this conversation is over,” he said.
Without waiting for a response, Damian turned and strode out of his office. His footsteps sounded firm, as if there were nothing left to discuss.
Dealing with Laura’s obsession with money would never end.
Left behind, Laura could only glare angrily at Damian’s back. Her hands clenched tightly at her sides.
For now, however, Laura had no choice but to hold herself back. Without evidence, Damian wouldn’t give her a single penny of the fortune she had been coveting all this time.
Laura finally turned and left the room with heavy steps. There was nothing more she could say to change Damian’s mind. Her face still held its irritation, while her mind continued searching for a way to obtain what she believed was rightfully hers.
