Chapter Three: The Guest List
The first thing Wren noticed, three songs into the Ashcombe Prep spring gala, was that Kai Hartley owned a tuxedo, and the second thing she noticed was that she should not have noticed the first thing at all.
This is a bad sign. Note it and move on.
"You clean up for the job," she said, when he appeared at her elbow with two glasses of sparkling cider from the refreshment table, playing his part as her date with an ease that made her wonder how many nights like this he'd already worked before her.
"The job requires blending in," Kai said. "Blending in requires a tuxedo. It's not a compliment, Wren, it's logistics."
"I didn't say it was a compliment."
"You were about to."
She had been, actually, and she hated that he'd caught it.
The gymnasium had been transformed for the occasion into something almost convincingly elegant, string lights threaded through white fabric draped from the rafters, a band on a low stage working through a set list that leaned heavily on songs their parents liked, and Wren spent the first hour of it doing exactly what her father had asked of her, smiling at board members' children, thanking Ashcombe's headmaster for the scholarship fund gala's success, being visibly, publicly, unbothered.
It was easier with Kai a half step behind her than she would have expected. He didn't hover. He didn't make it obvious. He simply existed at the edge of every conversation she had, present enough to notice everything, invisible enough that three separate classmates asked her, in low, thrilled voices, whether the new transfer student was actually her date, and she found herself, against every instinct she had about honesty, saying yes.
"You're doing the thing," Kai said, low, during a lull between songs.
"What thing."
"The thing where you laugh a half second before it's actually funny because you know someone's watching. You did it twice in the last five minutes."
"I didn't realize I was being graded on my performance."
"You're not being graded. I'm just very good at my job." He said it without a trace of arrogance, which somehow made it more irritating. "Also, the sophomore in the blue dress has been staring at us for a full minute deciding whether to come ask if we're really together, so if you want the lie to hold, you should probably stand slightly closer to me."
"Or I could just tell her the truth."
"You could," Kai agreed. "Or you could enjoy being bad at lying for exactly one evening and let me handle the details. I'm told I'm convincing."
"By who?"
"My aunt, mostly. She says I have an honest face, which apparently makes people believe whatever I tell them, which is either a gift or a moral failing, depending who you ask."
"I'd like to meet your aunt."
"She'd terrify you," Kai said, "and then she'd like you enormously. In that order."
"You lied to Priya," Kai said, quiet, a moment later, once the sophomore had drifted off unconvinced by nothing more than proximity and Kai's steady, unbothered calm.
"I told her what she wanted to hear. There's a difference." It was the exact thing he'd said to her about convenient versus planned, and the look he gave her told her he'd caught the echo too.
"Careful," he said. "You're starting to sound like me."
"God forbid."
"For the record," Kai added, "I'm an excellent date. Attentive. Punctual. Excellent taste in refreshments." He held up his cup of sparkling cider like evidence.
"You brought me apple juice in a fancy glass and called it a compliment to yourself."
"I brought you the only beverage on that table that wasn't spiked by the junior class within twenty minutes of the chaperones looking away, and I did it without you having to ask. That's the whole job, Wren. Noticing things before you have to say them out loud."
"That's either very sweet or extremely unsettling, depending on how I choose to think about it."
"Choose sweet," Kai said. "Unsettling is my day job. I try to keep it out of the actual conversation."

Milo arrived fashionably, deliberately late, in a jacket that fit him the way everything fit him, like it had been made specifically to make him look unbothered by trying. He found Wren near the punch table with the same unhurried confidence he'd used at her locker two days before, and this time Kai didn't hang back at a discreet distance. He stayed close enough that Milo's easy smile flickered, just slightly, when he registered it.
"Wren. You look incredible." Milo's eyes moved to Kai, and his smile sharpened at the edges. "And you brought security to a school dance. Bold choice."
"He's my date," Wren said, because it was easier than the truth, and because something about the way Milo said security made her want to give him nothing at all to work with.
"Is that what we're calling it," Milo said, light, easy, the words landing soft enough to be a joke and sharp enough not to be. "Careful, Wren. People will talk."
"People always talk. I've made my peace with it."
"Of course you have." Milo's gaze lingered on her a beat too long, the way it had at her locker, before he smiled again, the charming, familiar smile she'd known since freshman year, and reached for a cup of punch as if the moment had cost him nothing at all. "I hope everything with the company gets sorted before the vote. Must be exhausting, all this uncertainty."
"It'll get sorted," Kai said, before Wren could answer, his voice even and pleasant and utterly without warmth. "It usually does, when people who don't need to worry about it stop worrying about it out loud."
Milo's smile didn't move, but something behind his eyes did, quick and cold and gone before Wren could be sure she'd seen it at all. "Just being a good friend," he said, and drifted back into the crowd, leaving behind him a silence that Wren didn't know how to fill.
"That was a warning," she said finally. "What you just did."
"It was a suggestion," Kai said. "I don't warn people I haven't confirmed are worth warning yet."
"And is he? Worth it?"
Kai didn't answer right away, his eyes tracking Milo's path through the crowd with the same unreadable focus she'd seen on him after the locker room conversation two days before. "I don't know yet," he said. "I don't like how much I want to find out."
"That's the most human thing you've said all night."
"Don't get used to it. I have a reputation for being unbothered to maintain." But something in his posture had gone tighter since Milo walked away, a coiled, careful attention that had nothing playful left in it, and Wren, watching him track the crowd for a shape that had already disappeared into it, found she believed the reputation less with every hour she spent in his company.
"You really don't like him."
"I don't know him well enough to like or dislike him," Kai said. "I dislike the timing. I dislike that he showed up at your locker two days after a threat was made and touched your hand like he already knew the outcome of something you hadn't been told yet. Those are facts, not feelings."
"You catalog everything, don't you."
"It's the job," he said, and this time, for the first time all evening, it didn't sound entirely like an excuse.
*
It happened during the last slow song, the lights dimmed low enough that half the room had paired off without asking permission from the chaperones, and Wren, standing near the edge of the dance floor with Kai a careful arm's length away, felt her phone buzz once against her palm.
The screen lit with a message from a number she didn't recognize.
NICE DRESS. SHAME IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO IT.
Attached was a photo, taken from somewhere inside the gymnasium, close enough to make out the exact pattern of her dress, the exact angle of her shoulder, taken within the last ten minutes.
She didn't say anything. She didn't have to. Kai's hand closed around her elbow, gentle and immediate, and when she looked up his eyes had already swept the room once, twice, cataloguing exits and angles with a speed that told her, more clearly than the message had, exactly how much danger she was standing in.
"Don't look around," he said, low, close to her ear, his voice steady in a way that made her own pulse slow to match it. "Whoever sent that wants to see you scared. Give them something else."
"Like what?"
"Dance with me," Kai said, and it wasn't a suggestion this time either, his hand finding hers with a certainty that startled her more than the message had, pulling her the last half step into the kind of hold that looked, to anyone watching, exactly like two people falling for each other under string lights, and felt, to Wren, like the only steady thing left in the room.
"This is your plan," she said, against his shoulder, her voice not quite even. "Dancing."
"My plan is getting a location on that number without you looking like you know anything's wrong. Dancing is the part where you get to breathe."
She breathed. His hand was warm against her back, his heartbeat, when she let herself notice it, was not as steady as his voice, and somewhere out past the string lights and the dimmed gymnasium and the two hundred classmates who had no idea anything was wrong at all, someone with her photograph on their phone was still watching.
The song ended before either of them moved.
