Chapter Four: The Second You Look Away
The brake pedal went soft under Wren's foot exactly once, for less than a second, at the bottom of the hill on Sycamore where the road curved hard toward the marina, and that single second was the only warning anyone got before the car failed to slow down at all.
This isn't happening. This is not what is happening right now.
She had been driving herself to school for exactly four days, a small, hard-won concession from her father after two years of arguing that a seventeen year old with a license should be allowed to use it, and she would remember, for a long time afterward, the strange clarity of the half second in which she understood that the concession had very possibly just gotten her killed. The pedal sank to the floor with no resistance at all. The car surged instead of slowed, gathering speed down the hill toward the intersection where morning traffic moved through on a green light that had nothing to do with her.
She pulled the emergency brake with both hands and every ounce of strength she had, and the car screamed sideways instead of stopping, tires shredding against asphalt, until it came to rest hard against the curb with the front bumper crumpled around a stop sign and her own heartbeat the loudest sound in the world.
Kai's car was behind her within ninety seconds. He must have run every light between the estate and Sycamore to manage it.
"Don't move," he said, already at her window, already checking her hands, her collarbone, the side of her head where she must have hit something on impact because his fingers found a spot near her temple that made her flinch. "Wren. Look at me. Does anything feel wrong beyond the obvious?"
"I'm fine." Her voice came out smaller than she meant it to. "The brakes just. They just stopped working."
"They didn't stop working," Kai said, and something in his face had gone very still, very controlled, the particular calm she was starting to recognize as the thing he did instead of panicking. "Brakes don't fail like that on their own in a car your father has serviced every six weeks. Someone did this."
*
The mechanic her father sent confirmed it within the hour: the brake line had been cut, not severed all at once, which would have failed the moment she left the driveway, but partially, deliberately, engineered to hold just long enough to fail at speed, on a hill, near an intersection. Whoever had done it had access to the estate's private garage, understood exactly how much pressure a partial cut could withstand before giving out, and had timed it, with surgical precision, to a morning when Wren was driving alone.
Her father arrived at the scene white faced in a way she had never seen him, and it was that expression, more than the crumpled bumper or the shredded tires, that told her how close this had actually come.
"That's it," he said, once the tow truck had taken the car and the police report had been filed and Wren stood shivering in the cold morning air despite the jacket Kai had put over her shoulders without either of them commenting on it. "You're done at Ashcombe. I should never have let this go on this long."
"Dad."
"You could have died on that hill, Wren." His voice cracked on the word died in a way that undid her more than his usual controlled fury ever did. "I am not risking that again so you can have a normal high school experience. You're finishing the year with tutors. At home. Under full lockdown security until the vote closes and beyond."
"That's not a decision, that's a punishment."
"It's not a punishment. It's the only thing I can do that guarantees you're alive to be angry at me about it." He turned to Kai, who had gone very quiet at the edge of the conversation, watching Wren's face rather than her father's. "I want a full report on the garage's access logs by tonight."
"Understood," Kai said, and then, when Richard Calloway had already turned toward his own car, added, quiet enough that only Wren could hear it, "I'll get you back to school. Give me a few days."
"You're very confident for someone who just got handed an impossible assignment."
"I didn't say it would be easy. I said I'd get it done." He glanced at her, something steadier than confidence underneath the words. "There's a difference between those too, if you're keeping count."
"I'm always keeping count. It's turning into my favorite hobby."
"You can't promise that."
"I didn't promise it," Kai said. "I said I'd get it done. That's different."
"You say that a lot. Promise versus plan. Convenient versus planned. Do you keep a list of these somewhere?"
"I keep them in my head. It's a short list. Mostly things I've learned the hard way not to confuse with each other."
"Give me another one."
He considered it, walking her toward the car her father had already sent to collect them both, the tow truck's lights fading behind them in the morning haze. "Careful and scared aren't the same thing," he said finally. "People think being careful means being afraid. It doesn't. It means refusing to let the fear make the decisions for you."
"Is that from your mother, or from a manual somewhere?"
"Both," Kai admitted. "She used to say it before every job. I used to think it was just something she said to make herself feel better. I understand it a lot better now that I'm the one standing next to the wreck of a car with your name on the insurance."
*
She spent that evening in her room with the door open, an old habit from childhood she'd never quite outgrown, and found Kai standing in the hallway outside it well past the hour his shift was supposed to end, a tablet in his hand, the garage's access log already pulled up on the screen.
"You don't have to do this tonight," she said.
"I do, actually." He didn't look up from the log. "Because if I don't find something concrete by morning, your father's decision stands, and you spend the rest of the year staring at these same four walls while whoever cut that brake line gets to walk around Ashcombe like nothing happened."
"You care more about me finishing the year than I expected."
That got him to look up, finally, something unguarded crossing his face before he caught it and put it away again. "I care about doing the job right," he said, but it came out slower than his usual certainty, like even he didn't quite believe it anymore.
"You're a terrible liar for someone who does this professionally."
"I'm an excellent liar. To everyone except, apparently, you." He rubbed a hand over his face, the first genuinely unguarded gesture she'd seen from him all evening. "It's inconvenient. I'd like it noted for the record that I find it inconvenient."
"Duly noted. Shall I add it to the list? Between careful and scared and the difference between a promise and a plan?"
"You're never going to let the list go, are you."
"Never," Wren said, and something about the word, said lightly, standing in a doorway at nearly midnight with the weight of a cut brake line still sitting heavy between them, seemed to catch them both off guard with how much she meant it.
"Kai."
"The access log shows six people used a code for that garage in the last two weeks," he said, deliberately, professionally, steering them both back onto solid ground. "Your father. The head groundskeeper. Two mechanics on retainer. Me." He paused. "And one guest code, issued Tuesday, that nobody's claimed yet."
"Tuesday," Wren repeated. "The day of the note."
"The day of the note," Kai confirmed, and something in the careful way he said it told her he already had a name in mind for whoever had used that code, and that he wasn't ready to say it out loud yet, not until he was certain, not until he could hand her father proof instead of a suspicion that would only make things worse if it turned out to be wrong.
"You look tired," she said, instead of anything about the case.
"I am tired. I'm also not going to bed until I have a name attached to that guest code, so save the concern, I don't have time to enjoy it properly tonight."
"Is that a rain check?"
"It's a promise," Kai said. "Which, before you ask, I only make when I actually intend to keep them."
"Who requested the guest code?" she asked.
Kai's jaw tightened. "That's what I'm about to find out," he said, and turned the tablet toward the door, toward the stairs, toward whatever answer was waiting for him in the estate's front office at nearly midnight, leaving Wren standing alone in her doorway with her heart going too fast for an evening that was supposed to already be over.
