Chapter Five: Nothing Convenient
The guest code, it turned out, had been requested through a landscaping contractor the estate used twice a year, a company whose owner swore, convincingly and under the particular pressure Richard Calloway's lawyer knew how to apply, that he had never issued a temporary code to anyone outside his own crew. Someone had used his company's name to get one, forging a work order convincingly enough that it had taken Kai two full days of cross referencing invoices to prove the request was fraudulent at all.
It was not, in itself, proof of anything. It was, Kai told her father over a tense breakfast that Wren was not technically supposed to be present for and attended anyway, exactly the kind of gap a patient, resourceful person could exploit without leaving a name behind.
"So we still don't know who," her father said.
"We know it wasn't opportunistic," Kai said. "Someone planned this days in advance. That rules out a lot of people and narrows the list to whoever had a reason to want the vote stopped and the patience to set this up carefully."
Wren thought of Milo's hand closing over hers at her locker, of the message that had reached her phone in a gymnasium full of witnesses, of the flicker behind his eyes at the gala that she still hadn't found a way to explain to anyone, including herself, and said nothing.
"You've gone quiet," Kai said, once her father had left the kitchen to take a call, his voice low enough not to carry. "That's usually when you're thinking something you don't want to say out loud."
"It's usually when I don't have proof of anything, and saying it out loud feels like an accusation I can't take back."
"You can tell me. I won't repeat it to your father until you're ready."
"That's a very convenient offer for someone whose entire job is reporting things to my father."
"My job is keeping you safe. Reporting to your father is a means to that end, not the goal itself." He said it plainly, the way he said most things that mattered. "If you have a name in your head, Wren, I'd rather have it than not."
She almost told him. The words sat right at the back of her throat, Milo's name, the hand at her locker, the guest code issued the same Tuesday, and she swallowed them back down instead, not ready yet to turn a friend into a suspect out loud.
"Not yet," she said. "I need to be sure first."
"Fair enough," Kai said, and didn't push, which she was starting to understand was its own kind of trust.
Her father, to Wren's genuine surprise, did not immediately repeat his lockdown decree over breakfast. He looked, instead, tired in a way she rarely saw him allow himself to look, and said only, "I want a decision by tonight. Full lockdown, or a plan good enough to convince me otherwise."
"I can have one by tonight," Kai said.
"You'd be putting your job on the line for this," her father said, not unkindly, more like a man stating a fact he wanted on the record. "If something happens to her under a plan you convinced me to approve instead of the safe one, that's on you. Not the firm. You."
"I understand," Kai said, and something in the way he said it, flat, certain, already resigned to the weight of it, told Wren he'd understood exactly that risk before he'd ever opened his mouth.
*
She found him that evening on the estate's east roof, a flat stretch of terrace above the garage that she'd been sneaking out to since she was thirteen, the one place on the property where the security cameras had a known blind spot she'd never once told her father about. She wasn't entirely surprised to find Kai there first, sitting with his back against the low parapet wall, a folder of case notes closed on his knee, looking for once like a boy who had simply run out of places to think.
"You found my spot," she said, settling down beside him at a distance that felt, for the first time since he'd walked into her father's study, like her own choice rather than a professional requirement.
"I found the one place on this property with no camera coverage and no line of sight from the house," Kai said. "Professionally, that should worry me. Personally, I understand the appeal."
"So which is it. Worried professional, or understanding person?"
"Tonight, understanding person. Ask me again tomorrow and I might have talked myself back into worried."
"That's the most honest thing you've said to me all week."
"Don't get used to it," Kai said. "I have a reputation for being unreadable to maintain."
"You keep saying that. I'm starting to think the reputation is mostly for your own benefit."
"It might be," he admitted, and something in his voice, quiet and a little surprised at itself, told her he hadn't meant to say that part out loud.
"I've been coming up here since I was thirteen. After my mom got hurt." She hadn't meant to say it, not really, but the night was quiet and the city lights of Sterling Bay spread out below them in a way that made honesty feel cheaper than it usually did. "It happened during a break in, three years before that, when I was seven. A man got onto the property. My mom got between him and me. She was hurt protecting me, not badly, but badly enough that I've never stopped hearing about it, from her, from my dad, from every security consultant they've hired since. I'm the reason she has a permanent limp. I check my own locks twice a night and I've never told anyone that until right now."
Kai was quiet for a long moment, long enough that she almost regretted saying it, before he spoke, carefully, like he was handing her something fragile in return. "My mom's injury wasn't during a break in. It was a kidnapping attempt on a client's kid, a boy about my age at the time. She got him out safely. She took a fall doing it that ended her knee, and her career, for good. I used to think if I was good enough, careful enough, it would somehow undo what happened to her. I know that's not how any of this works. I think about it anyway."
"That's not fair to you."
"No," he agreed, "but it's honest, and you just gave me honest, so." He looked at her then, really looked, the careful professional distance he kept during daylight hours nowhere in evidence at all. "I don't think you're cursed, Wren. I think you're a person who was seven years old during something terrible, and every adult in your life has spent ten years teaching you to be afraid of the wrong lesson from it."
"What's the right lesson?"
"That your mother chose to protect you, and she'd choose it again, and it was never your fault that she had to." His voice had gone rough at the edges, the same way it had the night in the car, and Wren found she was holding her breath without meaning to. "The same way it wouldn't be my fault if something happened to you on my watch. I know that. I still don't know how to actually believe it."
"We're a mess," Wren said, and it came out as something almost like a laugh, warm and unsteady at once.
"We're a mess," Kai agreed, and for a moment, sitting on a roof with no cameras and no line of sight from the house, with the whole complicated danger of the last four days spread out below them along with the ordinary lights of Sterling Bay, neither of them moved to close the small, careful distance still sitting between them, though Wren was aware, with a clarity that startled her, that she wanted to.
"Kai."
"I know," he said, quiet, before she'd said anything at all. "Me too. That's exactly the problem."
*
He presented his plan to her father that night in the study, the same room where this had all started five days earlier, and Wren, listening from the hallway with her heart in her throat, heard the words temporary relocation, controlled environment, and full detail rotation before her father's voice cut in, low and considering, in a tone she recognized as the one he used right before he agreed to something against his better judgment.
"The lake house," her father said finally. "Full lockdown there instead of here. If you're willing to stake your position on it, Mr. Hartley, I'm willing to let her finish the week from somewhere that isn't the middle of Sterling Bay."
Through the crack in the study door, Wren watched Kai exhale, slow and controlled, the sound of a boy who had just bet everything he had on being right about her.
"Thank you, sir," he said. "I won't get it wrong."
"See that you don't," her father said, and Wren, standing alone in the hallway with her pulse still uneven from the roof, from the rooftop confession, from the small terrifying fact of wanting something she had no idea how to want safely, thought that whatever was waiting for them at the lake house, it was not going to be simple.
