Mara Flynn, a sharp second-year philosophy student, humiliates Union president Cole Ashby in a university debate final and discovers, to her irritation, that losing only makes him more interesting. Over an academic year of library encounters, late dinners, and a political rival’s attempt to use their relationship against him, Cole sheds the performed charm that built his reputation and chooses the honest, vulnerable version of himself instead, even when it costs him professionally. By the following summer, with Cole starting a London pupillage and Mara bound for an Oxford doctorate, the two choose each other deliberately, trading the easy wins of performance for something harder, truer, and entirely theirs.
