The Fox Cook in Dark Garments

Yan Gui, a former musician whose hearing has faded into total silence, climbs a nameless mountain until he finds a windowless stone house and its keeper, a fox in a black robe who cooks without a word. The fox prepares a luminous fish in a broth that unlocks a long-buried childhood memory and seems to promise healing. But nothing from this hearth comes free, and Yan Gui soon learns that the fox's cooking always takes something in return.
