After the interview, Melati left the building. She deliberately walked because she wanted to enjoy the fresh air. Yes, even though the weather was quite hot for walking.
Melati looked around. Then she gave a faint smile.
“Hopefully this time I’ll get lucky. The money in my savings account is running dangerously low,” Melati muttered as she continued walking.
Melati truly hoped she would be the one accepted. She desperately needed a job right now.
Melati thought of Resa, then glanced at the watch on her left wrist. It was almost lunchtime. Melati called Resa because she wanted to have lunch with her friend.
“Hey, Mel! Are you done with your interview?” Resa immediately fired off a question.
“Yeah. I’m on my way.”
“Why do you sound so weak? Are you sick?”
“No! Hey, do you want to have lunch together? If you do, I’ll come over,” Melati said.
In truth, Melati really hoped Resa would want to eat with her, but she didn’t let it show.
“Sure. I’ll just wait here, okay?” Resa replied from the other end.
“Okay. I’ll come straight there.” Melati ended the call.
A while later, Melati hailed a passing taxi and told the driver where she was going.
Throughout the ride to Resa’s office, Melati chose to close her eyes, resting her head against the seat.
Almost twenty minutes later, Melati arrived in front of the skyscraper. After paying the fare, she hurried out.
Melati called Resa and told her she had arrived. Resa told Melati to wait.
Not long afterward, Resa approached Melati, who was waiting in front of the office building.
“Have you been waiting long?” Resa asked.
Melati shook her head. “I just got here too. Where should we eat?”
Resa glanced at her phone. “How about somewhere nearby?” she suggested.
“Sounds good.”
The two girls walked toward the parking lot. Then they drove to a restaurant not too far from Resa’s office. They had deliberately taken the car because the weather was so hot.
Reno had just finished interviewing several people who had applied for the secretary position. It had been surprisingly exhausting, even though all he had done was ‘ask questions.’
Fortunately, Reno hadn’t really done it alone. Gery had helped him.
Reno had deliberately wanted to be directly involved. After all, this person would eventually work with him and serve as his right hand. Reno felt he needed to know what kind of person he was looking for.
Reno was currently reading through several resumes that had caught his interest. For some reason, he was willing to spend time doing that, even though he could have asked Gery to review them himself.
A knock on the door, accompanied by someone’s footsteps outside, made Reno stop what he was doing.
“Sir, would you like me to order lunch?” Gery asked as he entered the room.
It was lunchtime already. Reno might have forgotten, which was why he was still in his office.
Reno glanced at the watch on his left wrist. “Sure,” he replied.
Gery nodded in understanding and immediately ordered food online using the phone in his hand. Reno, meanwhile, returned to the task that had been interrupted by Gery’s arrival.
After ordering lunch for both Reno and himself, Gery walked over to Reno’s desk.
“Have you decided which one you want to choose, Sir?”
Reno, still focused on the papers in his hands, shifted his gaze to Gery.
“What do you think? Do you have any input, Ger?”
Reno didn’t answer Gery’s question right away. Instead, he asked for his assistant’s opinion. This had become one of Reno’s habits. Whatever decision he made, he always asked Gery’s opinion first.
“I’m not sure, Sir,” Gery replied, furrowing his brow.
“Why not?” Reno asked, puzzled.
Gery let out a long sigh before answering Reno’s question.
“There are two people I’d like to recommend to you, Sir. But both of them are highly capable and fit the criteria we’re looking for,” Gery explained briefly.
“So what’s confusing you? Usually, you only get confused when you can’t get what I ask for.”
Gery wasn’t the only one who was confused. Reno himself was having trouble deciding which one to choose. Based on their documents and interview results, both candidates seemed excellent to him. But he didn’t know whether the person Gery was referring to was the same one he had in mind.
Gery scratched his perfectly unitchy head. “Yeah, I’m confused too, Sir. I don’t know which one to choose because they’re both good.”
“Which one do you think?” Reno asked again.
Gery glanced over the papers covering Reno’s desk. Then he picked up two of them—the two candidates he considered the best and most suitable. He handed the papers to Reno.
Reno nodded, a faint smile appearing on his face. Gery’s opinion was exactly the same as his own.
“Actually, you’re not the only one who’s confused. I’ve been trying to decide between these two myself,” Reno said.
“See? I’m not the only one who’s confused. You’re confused too, Sir,” Gery said, sounding almost proud.
Reno could only shake his head at Gery’s attitude.
“So, which one do you think is more qualified?” Reno asked seriously.
Gery tapped his chin with his index finger, signaling that he was thinking. A few seconds later, he spoke again.
“But I already said I’m having trouble deciding which one, Sir,” Gery replied.
“You’re only making me more confused.”
Reno looked over the two papers in his hands again, shifting his gaze between them. The room fell silent for a moment. Finally, Reno lifted one paper and placed the other on the desk.
“What do you think of this one, Ger? This time, I need your opinion,” Reno said firmly.
“You want that one? That’s fine, Sir. Judging by the way they answered the questions, for some reason I’m very sure they’re open-minded. At the very least, that could help us, Sir,” Gery said, offering his opinion.
Reno nodded in understanding at what Gery had just said. But beyond that reason, Reno couldn’t explain why he felt drawn to the person he had just chosen.
During the interview, Reno hadn’t asked many questions. Gery had done most of the questioning. But Reno had paid attention to every answer from the interviewees. There was only one person he couldn’t stop thinking about and found himself drawn to.
“Then contact that person right away, Ger! The sooner, the better, right?”
“Yes, Sir!”
From the very beginning, Reno had instructed Gery to personally deliver the acceptance notice. Besides, he didn’t want to waste time. Once they found the right person, it was better to let them know immediately.
