“Okay, Sir. I’ll go straight to the office tomorrow,” Melati said brightly.
The girl looked incredibly happy as she answered the call from the unfamiliar number. Resa watched Melati, who was still talking on the phone.
“Sounds like good news,” Resa murmured to herself.
“Thank you so much, Sir!” Melati smiled before the call ended.
Resa, who had been waiting all this time, immediately approached Melati. She deliberately nudged Melati’s arm while Melati was still staring at her phone screen.
“So? Was that from the company you interviewed with earlier?” Resa asked eagerly.
Melati gazed at Resa with shining eyes. A second later, she nodded enthusiastically. A smile still lit up her beautiful face.
“I got the job, Res. I’m so happy,” Melati said, clasping Resa’s hand.
“Wow! I’m happy to hear that too, Mel,” Resa replied, just as excited.
The two girls hugged.
“Res, thanks! This is thanks to you too. You’re the one who told me about it.”
Resa pulled away from Melati. “Oh, stop it! You’re making it sound like I did something huge.”
Melati smiled broadly. “Say whatever you want. The point is, I want to thank you,” she said.
That night, Resa stayed over at Melati’s apartment again. For some reason, she had been enjoying spending more time with her best friend these past few days. After work, she had come over again.
“Are you really that comfortable here?” Melati asked bluntly.
It wasn’t that Melati disliked having Resa keep her company. She just didn’t want to inconvenience Resa by making her stay with her.
Resa pursed her lips at Melati’s words. She shot Melati an irritated look.
“What? Are you trying to kick me out?” Resa snapped, widening her eyes.
Melati rolled her eyes in exasperation. “That’s not what I mean! I just don’t want you to feel inconvenienced because of me,” Melati replied, her voice growing softer.
Resa let out a long sigh. Then she shifted closer to Melati.
“If I go home, I’ll just be alone there anyway. Here, at least I have you. At least I’ve got someone to talk to,” Resa explained.
Resa also lived alone in Jakarta because her parents lived in a different city. That was why she felt perfectly comfortable staying at Melati’s place. It wasn’t as if she would find anyone at home anyway.
“At this rate, I’m going to start charging you rent,” Melati scoffed as she got up.
“You’re so cheap!”
Melati shrugged indifferently. She kept walking toward the bedroom.
“Where are you going?” Resa called, half-shouting.
Melati glanced back. “I’m going to sleep. I have to leave for work tomorrow. Bye!” She continued on her way.
“Ugh! You’re no fun!” Resa went right back to watching the drama playing on television.
In the bedroom, Melati immediately lay down on the bed. She had already prepared everything she needed to bring the next day.
“Hopefully, this is the start of something new. You’ve got this, Mel!” Melati murmured as her eyes began to close.
Reno slowly blinked his eyes open. The ringing of his phone had woken him. Slightly annoyed, Reno picked up the phone he had deliberately left beside his bed.
The man grunted irritably when he saw who was calling him so early in the morning. Still grumbling, Reno answered.
“Hello! Why are you calling me this early?” Reno scolded the person on the other end.
“I’m sorry, Sir! I’m sorry for calling this early,” Gery replied hesitantly.
Gery was the one who had disturbed Reno’s sleep by calling him first thing in the morning. Something must have happened. Gery usually never called Reno at a time like this. That meant something urgent had occurred—something he needed to report to Reno.
