I wasn't about to lose, so I played along. Let's see who can put on the better performance. "Of course it wasn't your fault. I'm so happy you've been able to live comfortably all this time."
Anisa looked surprised by my words, but she fired back. "Your hands feel kind of rough, don't they? Not like a young lady from an upper-class family."
She was trying to make a dig at me, but she was such an amateur. "I'm sorry. Are you uncomfortable holding my hand?" I pulled my hand away from hers. "I always washed all the clothes and dishes for the Jaya family. Maybe that's why my hands ended up like this."
I put on a sad expression. My oldest brother, Jevan, who had been sitting on the sofa the whole time, stood up and walked over to me. He looked at me sympathetically. "That's enough, Anisa. Why would you bring something like that up?"
Jevan handed me a card. "Use this to buy yourself some snacks. There's a little money on it. Think of it as a gift for our first meeting. I didn't have time to buy you anything yet. I'll give you something better later."
Of course, I accepted the gift happily. "Thank you, big brother." I gave him the sweetest smile I could manage.
"Ahem... As long as you're happy."
My second-oldest brother appeared between Jevan and me. His hand was right in front of my eyes, and in it he held the keys to the newest RVC sports car. "This is for you," Jega said without looking at me. Then he started to leave, but stopped. He turned back toward me as if waiting for something.
"Thank you, big brother."
As soon as I said that, he started walking again. "Hey, isn't this the car you begged me for yesterday? Are you sure you want to give it away?"
Jega answered Jevan's question. "Let him have it. I have a motorcycle."
After that, he really did leave. From outside, I heard a motorcycle start up and then drive away until the sound disappeared.
"Amora, come over here." This time, my father called me. I went over to him. He took out a wooden box, and when he opened it, I saw a semicircular gold necklace inside. I quickly realized it looked a lot like the necklace I had always worn. I pulled my own necklace from my pants pocket.
This necklace was actually the reason I was found. I used to wear it all the time and tuck it inside my shirt so no one could see it. But a few days ago, I forgot to tuck it in. The sparkling gold necklace immediately drew attention. As luck would have it, while I was hanging laundry outside, my mother, who was disguised and out walking alone, recognized my necklace. She went straight home and reported it.
I had a birthmark below my right ear, and I was acknowledged as the biological child of the Damanik family. At least, that's what my mother told me in the car. Of course, I had no idea what had happened behind the scenes.
I held my necklace next to the one in the wooden box my father was holding. Together, the two pieces formed a perfect circle. My father was delighted. He took the necklace from my hand and joined the two halves together. "This is a hereditary family heirloom. Wear it as proof that you're the true Miss of the Damanik family."
"Okay, Dad."
I accepted the necklace after it had been joined together. I used to think my half necklace was already beautiful, but once the two halves were joined, its beauty increased several times over. I put it around my neck. "It's beautiful, and it suits my daughter perfectly," my father said as he stood up from the sofa.
"Show Amora to her room," my father ordered Jevan and Anisa.
The two of them acknowledged his order.
