Chapter 3 - The First Crack
The rain started just after nine. Ethan stood outside Claire’s building in Canary Wharf with his collar turned up and the access logs still open on his phone. He had found three more anomalies. Two of them pointed toward Webb’s team. He should have waited until morning. He should have sent a summary and gone home to his small flat in Bermondsey. Instead he crossed the lobby, nodded at the concierge who already knew his face, and took the lift up without calling first.
The door opened before he could knock a second time. Claire stood barefoot in dark trousers and a thin jumper, hair loose, the professional armour nowhere in sight. Surprise crossed her face first, then something sharper.
“I didn’t call you.”
“I know.” He held up the phone. “The logs. I thought you should see them tonight.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed. She stepped back just far enough for him to enter, then closed the door with a quiet click that felt louder than it should have.
“You don’t come here unless I tell you to. That was part of the arrangement.”
“The arrangement also said I advance your interests.” Ethan kept his voice even. “Webb’s team has been in the restricted folders twice this week. I can show you the timestamps.”
She took the phone, scanned the screen, and set it on the side table without comment. When she looked at him again the anger was still there, but something else had joined it. Heat. The same low, controlled heat he had seen in her office that afternoon.
“You came because you wanted to see how I would react,” she said. “Not only because of the logs.”
Ethan did not deny it. The rain ticked against the windows. The city lights blurred beyond the glass.
Claire crossed the room and stopped in front of him. Close enough that he could smell the faint trace of her perfume under the clean scent of the flat.
“You think because I let you inside me twice you get to decide when this happens. You don’t. Take your coat off.”
He did. She watched the movement, then turned and walked toward the bedroom without looking back. Ethan followed. The door closed behind them. The only light came from the city outside, thin and blue against the dark linens.
Claire faced him. “Strip. Slowly. And keep your hands where I can see them until I say otherwise.”
Ethan obeyed. Jacket first, then shirt, then the rest. When he was naked she walked a slow circle around him, the same assessing path she had taken the first night. This time her fingers trailed once across his lower back, light enough to raise gooseflesh.
“On the bed. On your back. Arms above your head. Do not move them.”
He lay down. Claire undressed without hurry, folding each piece of clothing and setting it on the chair. Her body was the same lean, controlled line he remembered. When she climbed onto the bed she straddled his hips but did not take him inside her yet. Instead she leaned forward, hands braced on either side of his head, and looked down at him.
“You wanted to see what happens when you take the initiative. Fine. Now you wait. You don’t move. You don’t touch. And you don’t come until I decide you’ve earned it. If you fail any of those, we stop and you leave. Clear?”
“Clear.”
She lowered herself just enough that the head of his cock brushed her, then stopped. The contact was deliberate and incomplete. Ethan’s breath caught. Claire watched his face and repeated the motion, slower this time, dragging herself along the length of him without letting him enter. Wet heat. Friction that promised more and delivered nothing.
“Stay still.”
His hands stayed above his head. The muscles in his arms tensed with the effort of not reaching for her. Claire continued the slow, controlled slide, coating him, teasing him, until he was fully hard and leaking against her. Only then did she sit back and take him in her hand, stroking once from base to tip with a grip that bordered on too tight.
“You came here uninvited. So you don’t get the easy version tonight.”
She shifted forward again and sank down onto him in one long, measured movement. The heat of her closed around him completely. Ethan’s hips jerked despite the order. Claire stopped immediately, one hand pressing flat against his chest.
“I said still.”
He forced himself to relax back into the mattress. She waited until the tension left his body, then began to move. Not the hard, functional rhythm of the office. This was slower, deeper, designed to keep him on the edge without tipping him over. Every time his breathing roughened she slowed further. Every time his hands twitched she stopped altogether and simply sat there, full of him, until he settled again.
The rain thickened against the windows. Claire’s eyes stayed on his face the entire time. She was watching for the moment his control cracked. When it came, when a low sound escaped him and his fingers curled against the sheets above his head, she leaned down and bit his shoulder hard enough to leave a mark.
“Not yet.”
She sat up and rode him properly then, hips rolling in a steady, merciless rhythm that made the bed shift under them. Ethan kept his arms where she had put them. The effort burned. His cock ached with the need to move, to thrust, to finish. Claire denied him all of it. She used him exactly the way she wanted, chasing her own friction while holding him in place.
When she came the first time it was quieter than he expected. A sharp inhale, a tightening around him, her nails digging into his chest. She did not stop moving. She rode the aftershocks, slower now, grinding down on him while the pulses ran through her. Ethan’s vision blurred at the edges. He could feel every clench, every wet slide, and still she did not let him follow.
“Claire.”
The name left him without permission. She stilled. For a moment the only sound was their breathing and the rain.
Then she lifted herself off him completely. The sudden absence made him swear under his breath. Claire turned, straddled his face, and lowered herself onto his mouth.
“Again. Properly. And you still don’t come.”
Ethan licked into her with the same focused hunger as the first night, tasting himself on her, tasting the evidence of the orgasm he had just given her. Claire’s thighs tightened around his head. One hand fisted in his hair, holding him in place while she ground against his tongue. She was already sensitive. It did not take long. She came a second time with a broken sound she did not quite manage to swallow, hips jerking, the wet heat of her flooding his mouth.
She stayed there for a few seconds, breathing hard, then climbed off and looked down at him. His cock lay hard and flushed against his stomach, leaking steadily. Claire wrapped her hand around him and stroked once, slow and tight.
“You wanted to take the initiative,” she said, voice rough. “So now you take the consequence.”
She guided him back inside her and began to move again. This time she did not stop when he started to shake. She kept the rhythm hard and precise, one hand braced on his chest, the other still holding his wrists above his head. Ethan’s control frayed completely. His hips lifted despite the order. Claire let him for three strokes, then pressed him flat again.
“I said still.”
He forced himself to obey. The denial burned. Every nerve felt exposed. Claire watched his face and something in her own expression shifted. The cool calculation had frayed. Her mouth was open. Her eyes were darker than he had ever seen them. When she leaned down again her forehead almost touched his.
“Ethan.”
The name left her in a low, almost involuntary sound. She caught herself immediately, but the damage was done. For one raw second she had said it the way he had said hers. Not as an order. As something else.
She came a third time with his name still hanging between them, body locking tight around him, a raw cry tearing out of her that she did not manage to cut short. The clench of her dragged him right to the edge. Claire felt it. She held still, breathing hard against his neck, and only then said, “Now. You can come.”
The permission undid him. He thrust up once, twice, and spilled inside her with a broken groan, every muscle locking, arms still pinned above his head because she had never released them. Claire took it, still shaking from her own orgasm, one hand fisted in the sheets beside his head.
For a long moment neither of them moved. The rain continued against the glass. Ethan’s pulse hammered against her palm where it rested on his chest. Claire’s breathing slowly evened out. When she finally lifted her head her expression had already begun to close again, but the crack was visible. She had said his name. She had almost lost the control she had built the entire arrangement around.
She climbed off him without speaking and walked into the en suite. Water ran. Ethan stayed on the bed, arms still above his head, the mark of her teeth throbbing on his shoulder and the taste of her still on his mouth.
When she returned she was wearing the robe again. She looked at him for a moment, then said, “You can lower your arms. Shower if you want. Then leave. I have an early call with New York.”
Ethan sat up. The sheets were wrecked. His body still hummed. “The logs are on your phone. Three more entries. Two from Webb’s floor.”
Claire nodded once. She did not look at the phone. “Tomorrow at eight. My office. Door closed. Bring a clean summary.”
He dressed in silence. At the bedroom door he paused. Claire stood by the window with her arms folded, watching the rain. For a moment she looked almost ordinary. Then she turned and the CEO was back in place.
“Don’t come here uninvited again.”
Ethan held her gaze. “Understood.”
He left. The flat door closed behind him with the same quiet click as before. In the lift he leaned his head against the mirrored wall and exhaled. His shoulder still stung where she had bitten him. His mouth still tasted of her. And for the first time since the arrangement began, he was not sure which of them had actually been in control by the end.
* * *
Claire stood at the window long after the lift had carried him down. The rain had turned the city into smears of light. She pressed her forehead against the cool glass and closed her eyes.
She could still feel him. The weight of him under her. The way he had stayed still even when it cost him. The sound of his name leaving her mouth without permission. She had not planned that. She had planned the punishment, the denial, the reminder that he did not set the terms. She had not planned the moment her own control slipped.
Her phone buzzed on the side table. She ignored it. When she finally picked it up the screen showed a message from the New York office about the early call. Nothing urgent. Nothing that required her attention right now.
She set the phone down again and walked back into the bedroom. The sheets were still rumpled. She sat on the edge of the bed and pressed her palm to the place where his shoulder had been. The mark she had left was already fading. The other one, the one she had almost given him with her voice, was not.
Claire lay back against the pillows that still smelled faintly of him and stared at the ceiling. Tomorrow she would meet him at eight. Door closed. She would look at the logs and decide how to handle Webb. She would keep the arrangement exactly as she had designed it.
But right now, alone in the dark flat with the rain still falling, she could not stop thinking about the way he had looked at her when she said his name. And she could not stop wanting, even for a moment, to say it again.
